Human Health

Curated by Thomas Billingsly
Health is the level of functional or metabolic efficiency of a living being. In humans, it is the general condition of a person's mind, body and spirit, usually meaning to be free from illness, injury or pain. The World Health Organization defined health in its broader sense in 1946 as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

This learning group focuses on: 1) the maintenance and promotion of health and 2) the symbiosis between the environment and health.

Hi im cole and I live in the US. I agree with Evan that the US does pollute and destroy the earth a lot(even though they have acts and laws that they have been put in place to protect and save our earth) and that each person can use less harmful materials. I believe that each and every person should do something or change something in their life so that the Earth benefits from it. the only thing is that we humans are always looking for a better quality life, and in that search we tend to overuse and abuse our finite environment. So its up to us to figure out the balance between human health(quality of life) and the environment.

Hello everyone! I am Evan and I am from the United States. I feel like out of all the nations, America produces the most pollution and destroys the environment the most. I think we all can produce less pollution by using less energy consuming products and switch to more energy efficient resources. If we do this we can greatly affect the environment we live in and make a greener planet.

Hi everyone, I’m Jocelyn. I lived it Taipei, Taiwan. I’m studying at Dominican International School. In Taiwan, we have a law that you cannot simply throw the chemical waste into the river or sea, which will pollute the water, and also effect the environment, or you will need to pay some money for that. Also, people in Taiwan support recycle very well, we usually separate the trash into three main category: paper, aluminum can and glass, plastics, and others, and that’s a good thing that the people from the other country should do it too. But, there is another thing that I think the government should change, and stringent the laws. Taiwanese really love dogs, almost every family they had a dog, but, many people are not responsible for their dog’s faeces, whenever their dogs wanted to “go to the toilet”, they’ll just bring them to the street and let them “do it” there without cleaning up, that makes the environment become stinky.

Everyone is responsible for protecting the environment. We can choose to live in a healthy and comfortable environment, if we want to. Just do it!!! What are you waiting for? Take action now!

Hi, I’m Eve, and come to speak of the environment, this is an issue that concerns many people, especially ongs and organizations, such as Greenpeace, Green Action, Edane, etc. struggling to improve our planet, fight:
+ against deforestation
+ to prevent the extinction of many species, both animals and plants.
….
And although such organizations exist, we can all put something of interest for our environment, and help keep it with small gestures, such as recycling paper, glass, organic products .. We can also use different light bulbs, consuming organic products, indigenous and seasonal, and multiple ideas more.
What savemos of our planet, based on the environment, there is still more than a small part given the atrocities committed incuviertamente, a clear example is this video, this is not just a music video, and was prohibited Published by the images it contained and displayed to the public, completely real.
please someone can answer me? telling his opinion on the environment? thank you very much.

I really like you to talk about the environment as it is a very important issue. For example, in the sea there are tons of debris and trash that pollute the marine ecosystem and destroys habitats. This means that many species, both marine, land and air, will become extinct and disappear forever.
This is a very interesting and disturbing.
    Thanks Eve.

Hi!
During ww2 when the petrol was rationed the health of Swedish citizens increased. Because they couldn’t use their cars they had to walk or go by bike instead, and that really increased the health of Swedish citizens. I am not saying that we should ration petrol again but we should think of that if we go back to basics (more natural exercise, ecological food etc.) it doesn’t just help the environment but our bodies as well. In a time were people die from being too fat we should really think about these easy steps to be healthier. An idea could be that instead of giving children a public transportation card or have school busses they could be given bikes to go to school with together.

yours seems a good idea but, if the children live too far away from school? think of winter, with rain. That would be a problem.

Hi again! I am a high school cross country cross country runner and I run anywhere from 4-12 miles a day. I’ve found that I prefer running on trails and in parks to cities and sidewalks. For a while I thought that it was the softer impact and the more peaceful environment, but the other day I was running down a fairly busy street, I realized how my breathing was heavier than usual. Running around towns is significantly more harder on my lungs than running in parks. The emissions from cars, stores, gas stations, etc really do effect me in a negative way-no wonder I prefer the trails!
This leads me the interesting problem I wanted to point out: as “smog centers” expand and air pollution increases around the world, runners, cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts are at a greater risk being exposed to air pollution. It is unfortunate, an frankly unfair dilemma to put at risk those who are working their bodies, promoting a healthy lifestyle, and strengthening bones, muscles, joints. Have we done so much damage to our environment that healthy habits have become unsafe?

Hello all! I find it particularly interesting that environmental climate change is being uncovered concurrently with discoveries surrounding the human genome. It makes me wonder how exposure to daily emissions, such as unclean air, is biologically affecting humans. And even more so, will we, ourselves be able to see the effect of climate change on us, or will it should up in the genomes of our children and grandchildren. Check out this link (Ghost in Your Genes) which looks at epigenetics, biological changes that occur without changes in our DNA.

I tend to notice that many poeple look for health in the bottom of a prescription bottle :/ which is not good (most times). More people need to see that the BEST way to be healthy and happy is by simply excercising and eating right :) Instead of playing XBOX or watching youtube, get up for 30 minutes a day and jog around, do some yoga, martial arts, anything to get your heart pumping!

i agree, the best health you can get is from the physical exercise and eating healthy foods every day, and get good nutritions to keep your body healthy instead of using medication(unless you really do need it..)

definitely and joining a sport can really help with this and just eating healthy will help too.

Poverty And Obesity: Breaking The Link :

To address this health crisis, attention must be focused on a key issue that lies at the core of the epidemic: the social inequities of obesity. A significant body of scientific evidence links poverty with higher rates of obesity. Findings from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), the most comprehensive study conducted thus far to document the nutritional status of the U.S. population, has found that low-income children and adolescents are more likely to be obese than their higher income counterparts [4]. Additionally, reports have shown a higher prevalence of obesity among low-income adults.
