WFP: World Food Programme has created a quiz that is funded by LG Electronics: “For every person who takes this short hunger quiz, a child will receive a warm meal thanks to an anonymous donor to WFP. Test your hunger IQ, then challenge your friends!”

If ever there was a online game to play this seems like a good one! It takes less than a minute!

Google’s browser Chrome has a bunch of great apps which include a plethora of free online games and other such things. One of their most popular games is a fun science based game called Little Alchemy. The premise is to combine elements to create a new element. There are over 200 different elements to discover and you start with just four!

Science could soon be as fun as video games! :: Children sitting in science classes across the nation may soon be able to take virtual trips through the layers of the Earth to see how shifting plates can cause earthquakes, volcanoes and make mountains. 

It’s all a part of the Science in Motion Project, a new game being developed to help students better understand complex scientific concepts.

I recently used this with my Year 10 Study of Society and the Environment class. We were studying a unit on Sustainability and World Management Issues. I flipped my class on its head; I let my students play the game for two lessons then we went through the textbook - they had all the answers to each chapter fully ingrained in their thinking before they even read the textbook.

And there would be a number of teachers who thought that games have no educational worth…we completed in a week what may have taken three without electrocity

This teacher says his game-based classroom is the reason his third grade students’ skills have gone from below third grade level to mid-fourth grade level in four months.

New Orleans Charter Schools are using games aligned with the common core standards (English and math) to teach core content areas.

“DimensionU is a video game-based learning resource developed by Tabula Digita for K-12 students. The multiplayer 3D games focus on skills and content including math, literacy, science, and, beginning later this year, social studies and history. DimensionU allows students to form online study groups or play individually, win a spot on a leaderboard, or earn tokens that can be used to enhance their in-game characters. In the U Games National Scholarship Competition students can compete for prizes including iPods, gift certificates, and electric scooters by answering math questions.”

A productive educational game. “For each answer you get right, we donate 10 grains of rice through the World Food Programme to help end hunger.” Several subjects and a cool idea.

Learning languages games. For young adults, children and adults. Something new to try.

Interesting way to learning several languages. Somewhere between courseware and social networking. Great exercises and rather helpful.
