Pushing street dance to its limits at DanceEast this Christmas

if you want to see some cutting edge dance theatre you’re in safe hands with Boy Blue Entertainment, the London-based, Olivier Award-winning, company.

It’s a celebration of the work they’ve done over the past ten years, musically as well as choreographically, fusing different styles with contemporary [dance] and theatre.

Moscow’s Center for Contemporary Dance and Performance, TsEKh, kicked off its annual Festival of Theater Dance this weekend. Now in its eleventh year, Moscow audiences are being treated to a weeklong kaleidoscope of some of the best contemporary dance, theater and performance around. In a city dominated by the Bolshoi in particular and ballet in general, the festival, which runs through Dec. 11, offers a rare opportunity to see a more experimental side of dance.

Here’s “Sad Tropics” (Tristi Tropici) by Virgilio Sieni, one of two Italian shows that will finish the TsEKh contemporary dance festival.

Rennie Harris, the renowned hip hop dancer who directs his own Puremovement company in Philadelphia, was invited to create a new work for the Alvin Ailey dance company this season.

“Home,” a dance about the AIDS crisis, will receive its premiere on Thursday, Dec. 1st, the day after Ailey opens its annual engagement at New York City Center. Rennie is one of the best and 100% faithful to old school hip hop.

Music critic and documentarian, Nelson George, walks us through a great story about the “The Genesis of Hip Hop”…rising from an abandoned city, hip hop captured the voice of a generation.

Urbanity, a hot young contemporary company tucked away in the South End of Boston, is one of my favoriet new troupes. I saw them at the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in August. It’s great to see a young company making it happen and beginning to receive well earned recognition.

For Alvin Ailey, a New Leader—and a New Style: The dance world will be watching the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater closely this fall—it’s the first season for the group’s new artistic director, Robert Battle, who replaced longtime director Judith Jamison. Adding to the challenge: The dancers are trying a new, unfamiliar dance style. They are tackling Gaga, a form of contemporary dance known for aggressive physicality and dramatic, raw power.

Carbon Dance Theatre made its Philadelphia debut Thursday evening at the Performance Garage with Swan Songs, a serious contemporary ballet program that uses the final songs written by classical and contemporary artists just before their deaths.

Carbon’s founding artistic director, Meredith Rainey, is a former Pennsylvania Ballet soloist and this year’s A.W.A.R.D. show winner for a duet he choreographed and danced with Sun-Mi Cho. Here’s a montage of the duet performed for the show.

It looks like a flash mob, but it’s actually the annual Israeli Dance Festival in Carmiel, which attracts thousands from all over the world.
