Student footprints

Moderated by I2I Admin
This is an open discussion associated with the International Student Carbon Footprint Challenge (ISCFC).

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our web site (see link at right). Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to identify areas in your life that you can make changes in order to reduce your footprint? Are you willing ot make those changes?

Graham Prestley, May 14, 2013

Hello there. My name is Graham. I live in a place in the United States called Pennsylvania, up in the northeastern corner of the country. My transportationfootprint is 406kg, which is much lower than the average in my area, mostly because I like to walk a lot and ride my bike and use public transportation. My home footprint is 8,411 kg. My Food footprint is 3,086kg. My purchases are 328kg. This makes for a total of a 12,231kg. I know that’s a tad less than the average in the area, but I keep in mind that it’s still huge compared to the rest of the world. I try to keep the environment in mind when I go about my daily activities.

Wow! That is a really low transportation footprint. It's admirable that you walk, ride your bike, and use public transportation so much. Many people prefer the convenience of their own cars but the carbon footprint of driving solo is huge.

Caitlyn L, May 14, 2013

Hi I’m Caitlyn from the US and I recently calculated my carbon footprint. My results were 2581 for transportation, 5337 for my region, 12820 for my home, and the average for my region is 7841. For food my amount was 2205 and my region was 4638, and my purchases were 732 and my region was 2486.So overall my personal scores were all under the average scores from my region. My total was 18339 kg of CO₂ per year, the average of my region is 20301 kg for Pennsylvania, USA. There are many ways that I could potentially reduce my carbon footprint.

Hello Caitlyn! I think a way to lower your carbon footprint is to install a solar panel system in your home and check if your local government support economically their installation.
  • Miguel Mendoza Miguel Mendoza May 22, 2013
Hello Caitlyn yes you should find ways that will help you reduce you carbon footprint. Some ideas could be replacing you light bulbs, unplugging things that run energy like phone chargers etc. Hope this helps keep up the good work.

Hello Evan, I'm Zoran and I live in Italy, your carbon footprint is very high, in particular for transport. To reduce this type of pollution can reduce short trips in the car and go on foot or by public transport.

That's great, that's a very low footprint for your area. What do you do that makes your transportation so low?

Martin Sedlar, May 14, 2013

Hi again,my name is Martin and I live in Varazdin,Croatia. My total carbon footprint was 5553 kg of CO2.That’s less than the average Croatian. For transporation I use my bike and my legs,so I don’t produce carbon emission in that field.I am not a vegetarian,I eat meat and meat has a large carbon footprint. When I go in purchase I always use the same bag and no plastic bags which other people get in stores. This discussion showed me how to produce less carbon emission and I’m glad that I was bellow average in Croatia. It’s a great project and I think that people in this project will stimulate other people to join in this project and make the Earth a better place for living.Bye ;)

Your footprint is signifcantly lower than mine of 9696 kg, and it's really opened my eyes to how much lower most of the world's footprints are compared to my country. What are ways you go about trying to lower your footprint that you think I could adapt to?
  • veronica berneri veronica berneri May 16, 2013
hello Maritn I think the way you porodure less carbon can be a very good method. But not everyone can have the possibility to produce little carbon footprint because they live in cool places and far from schools for example and then have to use more energy and transport!

Hi, my name is Eliana and I live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. My total footprint is 11,271 kg of CO2 per year. That’s a lot less than the average Pennsylvanian who uses 20,301 kg but is still a lot more than the worldwide average 3,791 kg. For transportation I use 4,655 kg while the regions average is 5,337 kg. At home I use 4,952 kg of CO2 but the average Pennsylvanian uses 7,841 kg of CO2. With food my number is 1,168, which is a lot lower than the average 4,638 because I’m vegetarian and meat has a large Carbon footprint. Purchases are also a lot less my number is 496 kg and the average Pennsylvanian uses 2,486 kg. One area I can work to lower my carbon footprint is transportation by taking public transportation and driving less. Seeing what other people around the world are doing to lessen their carbon footprint is inspiring and will show me more ways I can in my daily life.

Tziporah, May 14, 2013

Hi, my name is Tziporah and I live in Philadelphia, PA. Based on my input, my total footprint is 17704 kg of CO₂ per year, compared to an average of 20301 kg for Pennsylvania, USA. I have 8381 kg for transportation. For home my I have 6315 kg. I have 1748 kg for food. For purchases I have 1261 kg. I think that my transportation score is so high because my mother’s car is not as energy efficient as other cars are. My home score is also high because I think that I leave appliances on and don’t unplug them. My food score is low because I am vegetarian and eat no meat. I think that my purchase score is high because I buy new things a lot of the time.

One way you can cut down on your carbon footprint with an inefficient car is by walking and biking whenever you can. You had a really good idea with unplugging appliances. Your score for food is really low so being a vegetarian is really helping cut back your carbon output.

Hello, my name is Sam. I live in the USA in Pennsylvania. The school I go to is AIM Academy. The school is for dyslexia students. My carbon footprint is 33854 kg per year. The reason why I believe my footprint so high is because as a family we are not the most green but we are no really bad. My transportation footprint is 11294 kg. The reason why I believe it is so high is because I travel far to school almost everyday and I do not have a hybrid or an electric car. Here is my home footprint 17769 kg her is also my food 3975 kg and my home 816 kg. The reason why my footprint is so big is because in America we tend to use more then other countries so I was not surprised on my carbon footprint. A way I think I could make my footprint smaller is to get better at recycling.

I have the same issue. My carbon footprint is also very high because of my transportation. It is unfortunate because there is not a lot I can personally do. I do not own my own car so my parents control how many MPG's they want in a car. One thing that would be helpful is carpooling, but it is difficult also because not many kids in my neighborhood go to my school.

I have the same issue for instance I do not have anyone to car pool. I also live far from my school. But we could save energy other areas.

I found it fascinating that my footprint is significantly lower than yours even though I live in the United States. I find it interesting that your transportation is so high, maybe you drive a lot but you don't purchase things often. Maybe you can carpool with people to cut down your transportation emissions.
  • Cody Young Cody Young May 14, 2013
I live in the United States as well and my carbon footprint as about the same as yours. My transportation is about 12000kg of CO2 though. Much higher than yours. It's probably due to traveling back home to China a lot.
  • Tziporah Tziporah May 17, 2013
Hi Kim, I live in the United States also and my carbon footprint is mostly the same even though I live in PA. Maybe if you walked, biked, or took the bus a lot then your carbon footprint will lower.

Wow that so different compared to my result. I find that people in Europe travel a lot less so their transportation category is a lot smaller. I recently spent 7 weeks in paris for an exchange and saw the different lifestyles that you guys live compared to us in North America.
