Student footprints

Moderated by I2I Admin
This is an open discussion associated with the International Student Carbon Footprint Challenge (ISCFC).

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our web site (see link at right). Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to identify areas in your life that you can make changes in order to reduce your footprint? Are you willing ot make those changes?

Why is it that people don’t care about there footprint?? It makes no sense. People don’t understand how big of an impact it is that how much c02 is released to the atmosphere. . .

I think that is because people are enjoying the luxury of the finer things in life and not willing to face the consequences that the hold. So people try to ignore the effects and/ or choose not to give those things up.

Hey everyone, I’m Jake and I’m from Texas. I’m 17 years old and my total co2 footprint is 15,919. I’m below my reigons average but I still feel like that’s a lot and i’m going to be making changes in order to lower these numbers and help make a better footprint.

I also think what you could do is cut back on the usage of things that you have. Another thing that I think could help you is increasing about the different time that you use the bathroom such as for showers & etc.

Hello,
I’m Carlo Balosetti, I’m from the north of Italy and I’m 17 years old.
The carbon footprint calculator really made me realize how big of a carbon footprint I have, and helped me see the ways that I can try to eliminate some of this waste. Some lifestyle choices I have I can’t really change, for example, my travel carbon footprint is very high. However, I felt that relatively, my consumer footprint was very high, so I think that I should eliminate buying things that I don’t really need or even want that much. I thought the calculator was designed really well .

Tin Vojnovic, May 19, 2013

Hello, my name is Tin and I’m from Varaždin, Croatia. I’m 17 and my professor had encouraged me to participate in ISCFC.
My results: Total- 9697 kg CO2 per year
Transport- 1679 kg
Home- 4323 kg
Food- 3384 kg
Purcheases- 311kg
I’m glad I calculated that footprint, because I’ve realised that it is a lot higher compared to
an average of 5736 kg for Croatia, and it is time to take some changes in order to prevent growth of my carbon footprint and to cut it down as much as possible.

Isn't it just great to change the way you live after seeing the impact you have on earth? We can do so many things to hcnage the way earth is if we all work together, but we obviously can't do that as a whole!

Yes I agree with you. We do need to focus on creating new ways to reduce our carbon footprint that will impact our society.

Raphael R, May 17, 2013

Hello, my name is Raphael, I am form Philadelphia, PA. Its Located in America near New York. I am 14 years old. My total Carbon foot was 17548 kg CO2 per year. My home was 35540 kg CO2 and my food was 7737 kg CO2. My purchases was 920 kg CO2. I think that if I was to cut this down I could turn off my lights every time I exit a room. If I to cut down on food I could eat less meat. My purchases are not that much it is only 920 kg CO2. However if I wanted to cut it down I would go to Target and stores like that a lot often.

Stjepan C, May 16, 2013

Hello everyone! My name is Stjepan and I’m from Croatia. I’m 15 years old and I’m really glad I participate in the ISCFC. I have calculated my footprint and I found out that the total amount of CO2 I release is 5562 kg per year. That is about the same as the average in Croatia (although the usage of CO2 in the home category is 500 kg above the Cratian average).

I have decided to do same changes. First I’ll replace the old light bulbs with the new, more energy efficient ones. I’ll also try to reduce, reuse and recycle more. I intend to print and write on both sides of the paper because I cannot afford myself to waste the paper while the rainforests are suffering because of me. I will try to cut down on water consumption and take shorter showers as well. I can walk and ride my bike more often as well. I will use reusable bags instead of plastic ones. I think I will help my parents and grandparents in the garden every weekend so that we can produce more healthy food for our family.

I am aware of local and global air and water pollution and of soil contamination and of increasing number of people with respiratory and cardiovascular diseases and I think we should change our lifestyle as soon as possible. We should also do our best to help endangered plants and animals to survive. We should promote it at home and in school.

I am really happy to see so many posts from all over the world and I am glad I can learn so much from you! :)

Hi I’m Matt from Texas and my footprint is a little smaller than 10000. My footprint was a lot smaller I think because I didn’t really go anywhere or do anything.

    Hello Maddie M,

I'm Oliver and my total footprint was 13,014 for Transportation 3,303 for Home 5,200 for Food 590 for Purchase. So we live in the same area so our total footprint should be somewhat the same. !! oliver (:
