Exploration of World Cultural Arts

Curated by Bert Breton
The World Cultural Arts learning group examines the transformation and collaboration of different art forms. Cultural Arts embodies creative thinking and critique, which encompasses the analyses of contemporary visual culture alongside other art forms i.e. visual art, literature, music, theatre, film, dance, etc. Cultural arts help to explain the world in which we live, our worldview and often challenge current ideas, thoughts and practice. World Cultural arts are less about definition and more about meaning and making sense of our current environment through an exploration of creativity.

Andrew Dosunmu is one of the coolest Nigerian independent filmmakers. His latest film, Restless City, tells the story of young, nomadic Senegalese immigrant, Djbirl (played by Sy Alassane), an aspiring musician, struggling to survive on the fringes of New York City. When he falls in love with a prostitute (Jamaican-born model/actress Nicole Grey) who works for the local loan shark. This is a story of love and survival with some amazing photography!

Here’s a wild visit to the SHOEZEUM and a personal tour of Michael Jordan’s legacy in NIke sneakers. His original Air Jordan’s, 1985, revolutionized the sneaker industry and fashion forever.

Arts: The Art of Video Games:

The Smithsonian American Art Museum opened their new exhibit, the Art of Video Games, with a big festival this past weekend. If you missed it, don’t worry; the real festival, the exhibit itself, is far from over, as it is going to be running until September 30th.

Art of Video Games is, “one of the first major exhibitions to explore the 40-year evolution of video games as an artistic medium.”Awesome!

La La La Human Steps is one of the more thrilling dance companies today. I saw them perform last month and their sexy urban chic style was thrilling.

Their piece entitled New Work, one of their more conservative dances, explores power in relationships. It comment on the male gaze, as well as gender relations. The dancers’ movement often seemed mechanized, with the men frequently manipulating their female partners’ motions. It’s a beauty!

The process that has made Hermes silk products known throughout the world is steeped in tradition, detail and craftsmanship. It’s pretty intensive. Did you know it takes two years to make one Hermes scarf? Here’s a look…

I thought I’d share this wickedly atmospheric hip hop track from Gael Fay, entitled Petit Pays. It’s an ode to his home country Burundi (central Africa). Happy weekend!

Tnx Camilla. I have been busy with work last few months. Hoe to catch up in a few weeks.

The singer is Aruna Sairam. She is singing a song in Tamil laguage. Typically these kind of 'light' songs come at the fag end of a 2/3 hr concert.

White Elephants, (nzoku ya pembe) is an upcoming documentary on the central post office and its employees in Kinshasa, DR Congo. This grand relic of the colonial past has trapped its employees in a frozen timewarp from which they are planning their escape.
