Discussions Discussion Reuse & repurpose
Alexandra K-Sweden, Oct. 5, 2012

Hello!
My name is Alexandra and I go to Kungsholmens Gymnasium in Stockholm, Sweden.

Reduce, reuse, recycle!

Reduce: Ask yourself, do you really need another thing? Things, things, and more things… We usually have way too many things which is a great problem in our World today. We should all try to act as both individuals but also as a World to reduce our needs. Do we always need what we purchase? Ask yourself the question next time you stand in a shop. Do I truly need this or is it only a want?

Reuse: Reuse as much as possible. Try to think of all the things you are planning on throwing away, a way how to reuse them. Maybe they will come in great use again and then it’s so unnecessary to have to go out and buy another one. So what can one reuse?
-plastic bags
-envelopes
-jars and pots
-tyres
-scrap paper
-newspaper, cardboard and bubble wrap
-old clothes
Yes, the list can get very long!!!

Recycle: By recycling you can contribute to making valuable resources that otherwise would just become random waste. By recycling you help to not only save our environment but also money. By recycling no resources get wasted and then also our environment might be able to survive longer and longer…

So guys, reduce, reuse, recycle!
Keep that in the back of your head and hopefully you can make a change :)

Throwing things out is such an easy task. In-fact, recently I just cleaned out my room and now that I think about it I carelessly threw out a lot of junk hanging around. For the most part I did a good job of donating my clothes and old books, but there were just somethings I tossed into one bag to dispose of when really I should have gone through it all meticulously and figured out better ways of distribution.

I could have made sure everything plastic and paper made it to the recycling bin as well as sending all old left over food particles off on a one way trip to the compost.

I feel when we are always rushing we skip out on the important details of life, such as reusing and properly disposing of materials.

    So true Ry!
I aslo recently cleaned my room and made the same mistake as you did, I was sloppy and didn't organize them into different piles when i should've. Recyling has a huge impact on ones carbon footprint. Recycling is very important and if everyone recycled at least half of what they throw away the world would look a lot different and the world would be a better place to live in.

You have a good point about donating things. I think that donating things is just as good as reusing or repurposing things because they can still be used by someone else.

Hello!

I sure do agree that throwing things away in a recycling bin or just a plain bin is much more tempting or easier I should say than thinking about how I could reuse it which isn’t good at all. Whenever I go grocery shopping I usually don’t buy a bag because I always either have my bag (like a school bag or anything likely) or an old plastic bag that I would have bought earlier. At home under the sink we store plastic bags whenever we’ve bought something so that we could reuse them again whenever needing a plastic bag. I love second hand clothes/vintage clothing and buy lots of old clothes, so I guess thats a way of reusing clothes. :)

It’s really important that we reuse and repurpose rather than just recycle products. Even when we recycle, it takes a really long time for the materials to break down. Finding innovative ways to continually reuse products would really help reduce how many new things we buy that we don’t really need. Packaging is a big factor, too. Buying in bulk helps, because when things are separately packaged, it adds more garbage.

Personally, whenever I go out to the store, I always have reusable bags with me. It helps reduce the amount of plastic bags we have in my house, which are really hard to recycle. When I go out to eat with my family, we always bring containers to take home any leftovers or and to-go meals. We can just wash them and reuse them again!

Wow, you recycle a whole lot! I reuse plastic bags quite a alot as well whenever I'm going grocery shopping or anything likely. Impressive that you always bring containers when eating out! :)

I guess that I never really thought about how long it takes to recycle materials. It is a really good point to bring up. And I'm not sure, but it's my guess that in the process of breaking down materials to recycle them, that carbon is probably given off into the atmosphere. This really shows how important it is to reuse whatever you can!

There is always a better way. Ok it is better to recycle than to throw items to a trash can because these items will be use again. So recycle is good but that doens’t mean that we can’t use these items in another way. I saw some old rubber boots and how people turned them into a vase. I really liked that because it so unusually. I think we can reuse some items if we use our imagination.

I completely agree! We should always try to find a way to reuse before we just recycle things, because then we'll just end up buying more new things that we'll end up recycling, too!

How do we treat the environment? Is it ours? Do we have the right to destroy it? Of course not!

”The Earth does not belong to man; man belongs to the earth.”

We should take care of our planet because our planet is our home.
Our planet is polluted and a great deal of pollution comes from the fumes they give off. We should walk or use bikes instead, whenever we can.
We really should plant trees and flowers whenever we can because forests cover 30% of the Earth’s land and protecting all the forests is the key to our survival for the oxygen they produce.
Oceans and sea life are in danger because eight million tons of oil are spilled into the Earth’s oceans every year.
We are running out of space in which we can get rid of garbage.
We really need to do something!
And if we really care about the environment we should always remember the three Rs: REDUCE, REUSERECYCLE!

Cradle to Cradle is an interesting concept that constitutes a paradigm shift in the sustainability strategy. The concept of ‘Intelligent Design’ is worth a serious consideration.

Hello! I’ve been surfing the Internet and found two interesting websites. The first one “recycling guide” shows us why is recycling so important. It also shows us what are the best ways to recycle which I find very useful. The second one “Recycle City” gives us information on recycling, reuse, and waste reduction in a pretty original way, like a picture book. You probably do know a lot about recycling but I learned a lot of new information on these and similar sites which I didn’t knew before.
