Discussions Discussion Wants or needs?
Cole D-USA, Nov. 26, 2012

Hi I’m Cole. These are two innate human actions that are very hard to underdstand. The only way i can understand the difference between a want or need is wether or not the technology is a necessity(which is also very hard to understand, based off of the person wanting or needing the technology). What i think is that each person decides for themselves wether each new technology is necessity, and wether or not it is a want or a need. I personally see having/owning the latest technology as a want. it is without a doubt a want for me because for me personally all i need my iphine to do is call and text, when it has all the other amazing functions you can imagine. Getting the iphone for me was not a necessity/need, it was a want.

I love how you just up and faced that it was not needed, but wanted. Way to face reality. *brofist*

Needs are things people WANT to have, a necessity is something that people feel they will die with out.

Discussions Discussion Wants or needs?
Megan Peng, Nov. 22, 2012

Hai my name is Megan, im from dominican international school in taipei. When it comes to wants or needs, its pretty simple. iPhone 5? Its a comunication device, so mark as need. Cookies and cream ice cream? Its food, so its also a need. That pair of jeans that fits you perfectly? Well you need sometimg to wear, so why shoulden’t it count too? Tally up the damage caused by a few justification like this, and suddenly you’ve spent more than you intended. By saying you need something, its what you have to have, and cant live without. And what you want is something you would like to have, and can do fine if you dont have it. Life is meant to be lived, not survive.

I have to agree with Mitchell and Anisia. I don't see one bit how and iphone 5 (or any of those items for that matter) is a need. True, the iphone provides more entertainment with all of the apps, however, a phone is a phone. As a whole, face to face communication is much more important though. People need to know how to communicate in a community, not by staring at a piece of plastic. Also, most of the population that don't have those luxuries seem to be doing just fine. So keep that in mind as well.

I don't mean to be teaming up on poor Megan here, but It's hard to agree with such ludicrous statements. As a member over lower-middle class, I simply cannot afford the new iPhones, jeans that fit me prefectly, or even allow myself to splurge with some nice cookies and cream ice cream. As rediculous as it sounds, such people do exist, and sometimes, they can't help it. Money is, unfortunately, a need; unfotunately, for some, it is a need unfufilled.
  • Jason Hodin Jason Hodin Dec. 18, 2012
This is an interesting discussion, but I think all of you are probably misunderstanding what Megan meant. I think she was saying: while people might *think* that iphones, ice cream and fancy clothes are a need (communication, food, clothing), that attitude is what ends up causing high emissions.

As for her last line (“life is for living, not surviving”), I suspect that what Michelle means is that life *should* be for living, not just surviving. But clearly too many people on this planet (billions in fact) are living life to survive, from meal to meal. We should be very conscious of this fact when we describe having a cel phone or a piece of steak as a “need.”

Stefania Falchi, Nov. 18, 2012

Hi! I’m Stefania and I live in Pisa, Italy.
In this time, lots of teenagers, buy a new mobile also if it isn’t broken, every year. I think this happens because new mobile phones are placed on the market always. I also would like to buy the last Apple’s smart phone but it is needlees because I’ve a mobile that works. I know that I-phone 5 is more trendy but why buy a new telephone if I have another? Besides I-phone 5 costs a lot of money and I think that it isn’t correctly to spend lots of money to buy the last mobile’s models every year. One solution can be to buy a new mobile every two or three years and also if it isn’t the last model.

Hi, my name is Matilde, I'm live in Pisa, Italy and i'm 15 years old.
My carbon footprint is very high with respect to trasport and home; BEcause every day I do 30 kilometers by bus to go to school and back home and as regards instead the house, we say that being in five in family is normal consume a little. I will work hard from now on to consume less when I shower, turning off lights that are not needed.

Amaryllis F-USA, Nov. 18, 2012

Hi My name is Amaryllis, I am from the USA.
There are several things which are absolutly necessary for life. These are things like food water and shelter. However, now days, there are many things which people think are needs when they are actually wants. These are things like then newest computer, or phone. It is not bad to want these things, but we should not become super dependent on them either.

I completely agree with you. We need to stop with this always taking what we don't need. Computers can help us promote thinking green but also they are the reason we are hurting.
  • Xavier M-USA Xavier M-USA Dec. 2, 2012
Tun, still, if we didnt have computers, half of the advertisements out there would be crummy and intensely hard to put out to the public. If the advertisements aren't “pretty” and put together well, I know I normally wouldnt want anything to do with the product they are advertising. If more people react like I do, and they wouldn't want to buy anything advertised, the economy would do even worse than it's already doing. You see, as a society, we rely so much on electronics that we would collapse if we didnt have what we do these days.

I agree people make up excuses that having the newest laptops and phones is a necessity.

Joy U-USA, Nov. 16, 2012

Hello. My name is Joy from Texas. Some basic needs are food, clothing and shelter. Some normal wants are phones, computers, and new models of these phones and computers. Our basic needs override all of our wants, yet people always want material things like an IPhone, laptop, shoes, or clothing.

At some point, I think a teenager needs a phone and laptop for more efficient communication between their parents and family and to get more work completed in a minimum amount of time. But I do not believe that a teenager should be getting the newest model of a phone just because they want it. I also don’t believe parents should buy their children the newest models of things that their children already have because that money can be used for other things that the family really need instead of wants.

I don’t think it is bad to want something. I just think it is bad when people always want something that does not pertain to their needs. Every once in a while, it is okay to go out shopping for something someone wants, but it is not okay when someone is always in want for something they do not need.

Sarah C-USA, Nov. 16, 2012

Hello my name is Sarah and I believe that technology has become a detriment to society along with all the benefits it provides. The average teenager will spend about 5 hours a day in total using electronics. This is more than 1/6 of their entire day. Along with the huge impact electonics have on our carbon footprints technology causes other big problems. Some of these would be: increase in obesity, lower grades in school, and a safe haven for bullying and harmful activity. Every day people are coming up with ways to make lives easier with technology but by doing this they are coming up with ways for us to do less work. This is what aids in the increase of the obesity rate. Nowadays everyone drives every where and spends their time playing with the latest video game instead of going outside and doing physical activity. Technology can provide a big destraction to kids and teenagers. I know I catch myself focusing on social media when I should be doing my math homework. With so many destractions kids forget about their priorities and soon they pay the price for it with their grades. We have all had the lectures about cyber bullying and worrying about online predators. This is a serious topic that has been brought on by the advances in technology. It is easier for people to do things on the internet and get away with it because they are harder to find. These are serious problems that the advances in technolgy have been causing but by avoiding the urges to get the new iphone and the fastest computer we can help make technology a benefit in society instead of a detriment.

I agree; society nowadays is entirely too dependent on electonics.; for the worst. As you said, cyberbullying takes place, as our people spend hours and hours on end on their electronics. We drive everywhere, we are constantly on our cellphones. This not only affects out education, as we are distracted from our work, but it affects our country as a whole. And the US isn't the only one with this problem; many other countries have the same problem! Take Taiwan for example:

  • Brittany W-USA Brittany W-USA Nov. 16, 2012
Too dependent? Maybe. I agree in the fact that, yes, things like obesity and lower grades in school are caused by technology, but not directly. The only thing that effects your life is YOU. Technology is a choice and when a kid chooses to not go outside and play video games that is his choice. Everytime we choose to go on facebook or google things instead of reading about them, that is our choice. Technology is not a detriment to society, people are a detriment to society. Because what effects a society more than the people it is made up of? People choose to cyberbully, people choose to spend time on their electronics, people choose to not study to go see what their friends are saying online, people choose to do all of these things. Because technology like computers and phones are not a neccesity, this makes them a choice. And your choice between doing something that is fun to you- surfing the internet, playing video games- or studying for an exam will reflect back on your life with the consequences your choice comes with. I agree that people are lazy, but the laziest thing of all is blaming that laziness all on technology. We don't even want to take the blame for our own problem! Technology is there for everyone so why aren't some failing in their classes and others are? Because technology is the same, the only factor that truly effects your life is yourself and your choices.
  • Lanvy V-USA Lanvy V-USA Nov. 26, 2012
I totally agree with you Sarah but Brittany does have a point. Using technology is a choice, no one forces someone else to use it.

Evan V, Nov. 15, 2012

Hello, my name is Evan and I am from America. Americans use the most energy in the world and I am ashamed to be a part of that. I feel like we can easily reduce the energy we use by taking small steps to achieve it. For example, using less electronics or taking shorter showers can greatly reduce energy use if we work as a whole. Of course, we must work together and collaborate in order to reduce energy we use and lower the amount of pollution we produce. If everyone takes these small steps we can be successful in reaching a healthier earth.

Hi, I'm from America too. I agree with you. It is really sad how much Americans waste while a nearby country is dying of hunger. It seems like our priorites have changed ever since the advancments in technology. Many people complain about global warming and waste but they don't do anything about it. If everyone will pitch in a little bit, the word will be in a much better state.

America is the most wasteful country in the world, and if we tried, we could reduce our footprint by a lot. There are so many sources of power not being utilized that would work much better. Nuclear power, which many people are opposed to, could be a huge part of our power if we tried, and thats not all.
  • Trent D USA Trent D USA Dec. 6, 2012
its sad but true, america is very wasteful. taking small steps is a good plan and i feel that if we set a the example other people a will fallow and eventually america wont be as wasteful.

In today’s society, especially in America, we tend to gravitate towards excessive spending on technology that we don’t really NEED, but we WANT just for the sake of having the latest and greatest. We as humans living in a first world country only really need to spend on food, health care, utility bills, basic clothing, rent or mortgage, and education necessities, but even these basic elements of our daily lives we take for granted. We need to keep in mind that there are people out there that lack even these essential things. People living in third world countries don’t have lives as easy as ours, and they outnumber us, so we can come to the conclusion that we are fortunate to even be posting something on this website. I highly encourage you all to take the time out of your day and watch this video that I found because it really made me open my eyes to the world around me, and now I am more grateful for what I have. So the next time you feel like caving in to buying what you don’t absolutely need, consider how lucky you are to have the things that you take for granted.

Great video! It is amazing how many things we take for granted. We should sometimes stop what we're doing and be thankful for everything that we have. I really liked the video. It helps you think about everything you have and how you should always be greatful for what you have, no matter what.

David Tu, Nov. 15, 2012

Hi, my name is David. Today, I want to discuss about wants and needs. People want many things, but they actually doesn’t need it. Let’s talk about need first, need means to require something that use in this life. For example, home, food, clothes, water, and medical care. This is require in life and without this, you can’t survive. Now let’s talk about want. want is something that you wish for but it is not really required in life. For example, iPhone is a very useful device in modern time, it can play and download a lot of games. But, this is not require because main use of phones is to call other people. Thank you for reading.

Hi I am Kelly and i live in the USA. Technology is a big part of our carbon footprint. Our cell phones, computers, and televisions may seem like a good thing but they have a negative impact on our environment. Having the newest technology may seem like the most important thing but its not. Purchasing the newest things increase our carbon footprint. The use of a cell phone everday is a problem and unfortunately i am apart of this negative impact just like so many others. What people dont know is if they cannot stop using the phone they can at least be smart about it. Recycling cell phones when you buy a new one is a smart thing to do. Also limiting your use as much as possible will have a positive affect.
