To all of the people that have all of the electronics one can imagine; do you really think you do not make a difference? Because there are many more like you, who do not think they make a difference. If you could add up all of the people like this, you might get an immense number of CO2 emissions just coming out every day. Think about it. You are currently and constantly killing our planet, along with everyone else, just more so.

Despite my last post, I’m going to play devil’s advocate here. Let’s pretend I had all of these electronics. Why shouldn’t I have them? I’m just one person, I couldn’t possibly make a difference. Just because I charge all of these all of the time, why do I support the CO2 emissions to the atmosphere? Discuss.

I would say that a lot of people have this mindset. If a million people think, ” I can't make a difference by myself”, they are right, but all of them are making a difference together. If a million people think that they can make a good difference, they are making one together. It works both ways. -

I agree with Duncan, because I believe that everyone can make a difference. Whether its from one person or a whole group. I think that is true, even if it takes a lot of work to make a difference. -

Very much agreed. By the way, I don't actuallly have this mindset, I just wanted people to have a base for discussion.

Having the latest technology is not exactly the most improtant thing ever, but if you want to keep up with events, you might need something of the sort. Imagine you live somewhere like London, dont have any electronics or internet, and you want to visit the London Eye. When you show up, the entire thing is not moving, and there is a person shouting that there are some technical problems, and it wont be working until tomorrow. If you had some sort of news-giving device, you might have see that one of the bolts came loose, and they had to send electricians and mechanics up there to fix it! It could have saved you a large chunk of your day, and you could have done something else, instead of wasting your time with an oversized (broken) ferris wheel. However, this was merely an inconvenience. This could have been avoided wiht the use of some electronic, but it’s not like your life is going to end. As shown, having an electronic is an INCONVENIENCE, not a neccessity.

I believe that having the latest technology is more of a want than a need. Everyday, I hear someone say “I WANT the new Ipod” or ” I WANT a new phone”. Every once in a while I’ve asked why they want one so badly and the answer is usualy either 1. “My current one sucks” or 2. “Because its way better than the older ones”. But honestly, do you really NEED a new ipod if the one you have works just fine?

I agree. Wanting something is much different than owning something. I look at these people that are very concious of the environment or homeless, and they are getting along just fine without any of these things. -

I agree with Kallie, we don't really need the latest technology it is more of a want. Although I think we do need computers because they are very helpful for educational uses. So having technology has its perks and its down falls.

I don’t think anyone really needs any of the latest tech. It’s a want in my opinion. If you use it to relieve stress try and find something else. If you can’t I guess that’s okay. Seriously though, limit the things you buy that destroy the environment. Think of the future, how are your descendants going to use these things and have fun if they’re dead or can’t for another really bad reason that has to do with global warming. To not care about them would be extremely selfish. You’re not the only one in the world so don’t mess it up for everybody else, especially the people who are actually trying to help the environment.

For me, having the latest technology is a want but not having the latest technology can also be a huge disadvantage. If i didn’t have a computer i don’t think i would able to finish half of my assignments so for kids who don’t have a computer or a printer and who have to finish all of there homework at school during lunch it must be really hard. For kids who do have computers however, restraint on buying the latest computer or phone and not using them all the time is probably a good idea.

I agree with this 100%. Electronics of all kinds are very helpful in everyday life and without them our society wouldn't be where it is today. However, I also think it is defiantly more of a want than a need when people get a new version of something when they have a perfectly good older version. -
Duncan w-U.S.A. Dec. 3, 2012
Anyway, you can just use the old version that you have that works perfectly fine. -
kallie B-USA Dec. 6, 2012
I agree with Duncan. Why get a new one when the old one does basically the same thing?

It seems to me like having the latest technology is usually not a need. I don’t really see a huge difference between the newest version of the Iphone and the last generation. I think that it’s fine to upgrade every few generations when it gets to the point that what you have is completely unusable compared to new things. You can break the addiction if you see that the new one is not really that much better, and will cost like $300.

Hi Kallie- Here is an article on the carbon footprint of personal electronics

alec- every new device that you buy needs to be produced, and the old device disposed of. Both entail a significant carbon footprint. In addition, these are sources of non-climate pollution as well.
If you disagree, why not give some details of your argument here?

Hi I’m Cole. These are two innate human actions that are very hard to underdstand. The only way i can understand the difference between a want or need is wether or not the technology is a necessity(which is also very hard to understand, based off of the person wanting or needing the technology). What i think is that each person decides for themselves wether each new technology is necessity, and wether or not it is a want or a need. I personally see having/owning the latest technology as a want. it is without a doubt a want for me because for me personally all i need my iphine to do is call and text, when it has all the other amazing functions you can imagine. Getting the iphone for me was not a necessity/need, it was a want.

I love how you just up and faced that it was not needed, but wanted. Way to face reality. *brofist* -

Needs are things people WANT to have, a necessity is something that people feel they will die with out. -

Hai my name is Megan, im from dominican international school in taipei. When it comes to wants or needs, its pretty simple. iPhone 5? Its a comunication device, so mark as need. Cookies and cream ice cream? Its food, so its also a need. That pair of jeans that fits you perfectly? Well you need sometimg to wear, so why shoulden’t it count too? Tally up the damage caused by a few justification like this, and suddenly you’ve spent more than you intended. By saying you need something, its what you have to have, and cant live without. And what you want is something you would like to have, and can do fine if you dont have it. Life is meant to be lived, not survive.

I have to agree with Mitchell and Anisia. I don't see one bit how and iphone 5 (or any of those items for that matter) is a need. True, the iphone provides more entertainment with all of the apps, however, a phone is a phone. As a whole, face to face communication is much more important though. People need to know how to communicate in a community, not by staring at a piece of plastic. Also, most of the population that don't have those luxuries seem to be doing just fine. So keep that in mind as well. -
Xavier M-USA Dec. 2, 2012
I don't mean to be teaming up on poor Megan here, but It's hard to agree with such ludicrous statements. As a member over lower-middle class, I simply cannot afford the new iPhones, jeans that fit me prefectly, or even allow myself to splurge with some nice cookies and cream ice cream. As rediculous as it sounds, such people do exist, and sometimes, they can't help it. Money is, unfortunately, a need; unfotunately, for some, it is a need unfufilled. -
Jason Hodin Dec. 18, 2012
This is an interesting discussion, but I think all of you are probably misunderstanding what Megan meant. I think she was saying: while people might *think* that iphones, ice cream and fancy clothes are a need (communication, food, clothing), that attitude is what ends up causing high emissions.
As for her last line (“life is for living, not surviving”), I suspect that what Michelle means is that life *should* be for living, not just surviving. But clearly too many people on this planet (billions in fact) are living life to survive, from meal to meal. We should be very conscious of this fact when we describe having a cel phone or a piece of steak as a “need.”

Hi! I’m Stefania and I live in Pisa, Italy.
In this time, lots of teenagers, buy a new mobile also if it isn’t broken, every year. I think this happens because new mobile phones are placed on the market always. I also would like to buy the last Apple’s smart phone but it is needlees because I’ve a mobile that works. I know that I-phone 5 is more trendy but why buy a new telephone if I have another? Besides I-phone 5 costs a lot of money and I think that it isn’t correctly to spend lots of money to buy the last mobile’s models every year. One solution can be to buy a new mobile every two or three years and also if it isn’t the last model.

Hi, my name is Matilde, I'm live in Pisa, Italy and i'm 15 years old.
My carbon footprint is very high with respect to trasport and home; BEcause every day I do 30 kilometers by bus to go to school and back home and as regards instead the house, we say that being in five in family is normal consume a little. I will work hard from now on to consume less when I shower, turning off lights that are not needed. -

Hi!My name is Rosana, and I'm live in Calarasi,Romania.I'm 17 years old.My carbon footprint is very high too,but only respect to home.I think this happens because the most things I do at home and here it is product the highest consumption. My familly has 4 members and it is normal that consume to be higher.Whatever,my familly and I try to decrease this consume, using conscious the shower, using more energy-saving bulbs and other things that help to waste CO2.I hope to succeed this!
