Discussions Discussion Wants or needs?

Technology in general is and will be a need thing, but having the latest technology is a want thing. The products that we will have to morrow aren’t that much better than the technology that we have today. The reason why people want to have all the new tech stuff is because technology is like fashion, people just like to buy new stuff.

Discovery is like baby steps, tomorrow's technology may not be that different from today's, but it is still good to pitch in and buy some, because next years technology will be

Technology is these days a need in my opinion, i have got the latest technology beacause i simply want it. i think the world will never be able to cut back in the teenagers buying new and better phones or computers if the world keeps improving their technology so that the new phones are not only better but also more useful. if the world wants to change anything about technology it should be more use of it and just stop using paper.

So what you mean is that we can choose if we buy all these new things that effect our nature? If you are, I really agree with you, but, if we decide to stop buying all the new stuff it won't make all the other people stop bying it so it won't make a difference.

so why fight it? just use the old phones to help make new ones. lets say my phone is broken beyond repair but the graphics card is completely fine i think we should use the things that work in old phones to repair new phones for example my old Samsung Galaxy still works so i'm gonna donate him to the company that repairs phones so they can use the parts that why my old phone is “reused”

Having the latest technology is a want. For example when a new Iphone comes you don’t have to be one of the first to get it, if all of your friends have an Iphone 5 it doesn’t mean that you need to get one too. Phones were made to let people have communication between each other. I find smartphones useless since the good old Nokia did it’s job, I mean, we could call and text each other. People need phones to communicate and often it saves lives.
People that are addicted to their phones can break the addiction just by using their old phone again. Since there isn’t ‘snapchat’ or ‘facebook’ in the phone they’ll get bored and only use it to text and call people when they need it.

Now in the modern days us humans pollute more than the earth can take. We don‘t have to do that it can and has to stop. We are stuck and have grown up in time where comfort and the latest fashion is a necessity. Young people change or upgrade their phone ones and some even twice a year. Why don‘t we use our perfectly good phone till it is broken? It both saves material and when we throw it away we pollute so we are saving the environment by keeping our electronics until they run their course.

hi everyone!I totally agree with you about phones that the whole world is driving crazy about them and about car emissions I think that the best way to reduce them is to share cars with some more other people.

Hi im Austin! i agree with you guys, we are all to worried about getting the newest technology without even thinking about what it may be doing to our earth. Yeah, the new phones look a lot cooler than the older models, but really there isn't much of a difference. If we all waited until our phones were done completely, imagine how much materials and energy we could save!

Technology is something what have grown very big last few years. I think it is something that we need and what we want. Like the latest IPhone is something what we want. We don’t need it more than we need a DVD-player. But a phone in general is something what we need. It can save lives. Like if you’re stuck on mountains you can call someone to come and save you. Also we use technology in medicine. In surgeries we use all kind of technology to help us and that is something we need.
People now a day are subjected to latest technology because it is kind of a fashion to have, for an example, the newest iPhone.

Having the latest technology is indisputably a want.

That being said, so are a lot of the luxuries we are fortunate enough to enjoy in such a a developed and privileged area. For instance, as much as we believe we need a car, we don’t. It is possible to survive without a car. Yet this is some what a peculiar principle, because these technologies enhance quality of life and increase efficiency. Don’t get me wrong, it is important to ride a bike whenever practical, but practicality is the name of the game.

Having grown up in Silicon Valley, I have become quite accustomed to living on the cutting edge of technology. I have a predilection for innovation, and a passion for entrepreneurship (albeit socially conscious entrepreneurship). These … to be continued bruh

I agree but people won't stop using technology just like that. Nowadays almost everyone in developed countries has a mobile phone and maybe even a laptop. And what most people have, others want too. But little by little, maybe with spending more time in the nature like you suggested, or by talking with friends in live instead of texting messages we could achieve a lot. We would reduce our carbon footprint.

I agree. People today are more and more jealous and if someone gets something new, at least few of his friends would like it too. Maybe that is one of the biggest problem. Instead of being jealous we should be happy and share the experience with others, that way we would spend less on new `toys´ but also spend more time with friends.

Hi, I am a student from Palo Alto High School in California. The way I see it, having the latest technology is want, not a need. Living in Silicon Valley, where technology flourishes everyday, I can definitely relate to the seeming need to have all the new gadgets and phones. My parents tend to purchase new gadgets when they come out. I did not know that such purchases have such an environmental impact. I hope that my family and our community can turn to recycling technology and reducing our “want” for them.

Hi, im from iceland! I guess we live very different lives. Iceland is both small and there are a few people here but, we also have the new gadgets that come out ever so often, tempting us to buy new things such as new phones but it is totally a want, we don't need all these things.

Putting emphasis on the word latest, this is definitely considered a “want”, rather than a need. This word implies that it is not the technology itself which is being purchased, but an upgraded version of something which is already possessed. Given that you already have a device which can perform the same function as the desired device, this is clearly not something that is necessary.

However, having said that, it is true that these technologies do at some point need to be replaced, as the small changes introduced each year do eventually lead to an almost entirely different device, which may have many abilities which simply did not exist back 5 or 10 years ago. This time frame can be different depending on what type of device it is. Most calculators preform much in line with what they did in decades prior, needing only to be replaced when they break or no longer function, while a 20 year old computer, even in perfect condition, is often considered a burden, something to be disposed of.

Thus, when considering a purchase, you should ask yourself, what you want to use this new product for which you cannot do with your current technology, and question if that functionality worth the cost both financially and environmentally which come with replacing an electronic device.

Hello,
When I calculated my carbon footprint I was very surprised at how high it was. Transportation was the highest, and to reduce that I will try to bike more often. Any suggestion of how I can reduce my carbon footprint?
Thanks

You can also walk and take public transportation, that will produce less carbon use.
  • Jon Freyr Bjarnason Jon Freyr Bjarnason Feb. 12, 2014
You should just walk or ride a bicycle that will reduce your carbon so much
  • Elvar Örn Jónsson Elvar Örn Jónsson Feb. 12, 2014

Hello,
Unfortunately I have the rare desire to take multiple baths a day, which probably made my footprint very high. I think I should stop, but I can’t. Any advice?

Use public pools in stead of reheating water all the time
  • Eydís Eva Eydís Eva Feb. 12, 2014
I think you should use public swimming pools, for that way you don't need to reheat water endlessly. Moreover, instead of taking baths, try washing your hands or face, that should do you some good. But do remember, like the people above me have said, that there are other people in the world who need to use water expect you.Now i don't mean to be rude, but that is the truth.Think about all the children in Africa for exempel. They could use the water,so please don't spend it all on yourself
