Technology is definitely becoming closer and closer to becoming fully integrated into nearly every aspect of our lives. With the newest model or version coming out it is hard to avoid spending and affecting the environment. However, only buying a new model once every few years can help while still having the latest technology. I’ve had my phone for the past 2 years and still am able to do the same functions that most of the brand new phones do today.

You're right, I think that a mobile phone can be used for 2 or 3 years if it breaks. New models come out all the time with very high prices that do not offer many services more than those that already exist on the market that cost less. Many people change their mobile to follow the fashion and to dispose those that you no longer use is very polluting.

Having a technology is both a want and a need. Technology surely makes our lives a lot more convenient, but without technology, our life expectancy would not be where it is right now. I have my fair share of technology that I don’t necessarily need. But it certainly makes my life a lot more convenient. Also, technology is our answer to saving the environment. Advancements in technology such as wind turbines, solar energy, can only be improved with these advancements.

Technology is definitely both a want and a need. Technology makes life and communication much easier; however, the desire to have the latest technology is definitely more of a want than a need. If someone already has a phone or a computer, there is no true need to get the latest gadget because the one he or she has should be good enough. The desire for the best and newest devices is truly just wasteful.

Hi!
I think that technology is a want and a need; it’s a need because if we want to communicate with other people we need a phone or a computer. Thanks to social network, a lot of people use computer to communicate with their friends. It’s a want because we change phone every year, we buy new iphone and we pay it 800€, we buy the more expensive pc because we want to show it to our friends. Finally I think we can buy less appliances because not all are a need.

I agree completely, except for the fact that technology is a need. Of course, it is something that we want; something that makes our lives easier, but do we really need it? Imagine living in colonial times when phones and computers didn't even exist. My comment only refers to recreational or communicational technology not medical technology.

Everyone wants the newest things or gadgets, even if it wastes a lot of energy. PC, phone, tablets and many other things must be charged; but a lot of people plugged in their electronics even when they are fully charged. The energy used if the laptop isn’t turned off at night is the equivalent of leaving 10 light bulbs on all night. If you reduce this waste energy, you reduce the pollution and you also reduce your energy bill. To respect the environment, I think we must always disconnect appliances fully charged.

I believe that technology is a necessity in our everyday lives but we use it way too much. Yes, it is true that having a cellphone is always useful in a pinch, and that having a radio or television to get up to speed with the news helps. But there are also the negative technologies like video games. Yes, we do spend a lot on cell phones but they are very useful. However, video games are the killers. If we manage to invest less on video games, we will be able to massively reduce our carbon footprints.

I also leave my computer on sleep all the time. I never turn it off. I should start turning it off when I do not use it.

Another good idea is unplug chargers from the walls when your gadget is fully charged because, although its small, there is some waste energy that goes into it staying plugged in but it adds up.

Dominika P-Poland, May 10, 2013

Hi! My name is Dominika. I come from Poland. My total print result is 6092 kg Co2 per year, my class 7677. It is a bit lower than the results in my region and class. “Food” is the category where I have the higher results, “Transport”, where i have the lower results.I think, that transport is so low, because I rarely fly by plane, usually ride the bus. Food is so high, because I like eat a lot :)
I hope it will be better :)

I think that you should eat less when possible and that may help.

Yes, I know. When my mom was buying so many products - a lot of yogurt, meat, we eat it later. But certainly I tell her that she bought less;)

Hi ! I am Kate and my total footprint result is 13601 kg. This is higher than the average person in Poland. In my class totall footprint result is 7677 kg so My is such bigger. My lowest score is in category “purchases”. I am surprised because I buy a lots of things per year. My highest score is in category “home” because when I brush my teeth I never turn water off and I take schower 30 minutes. So I think I can reduce using water to save natural resources. But to my mind I won’t be able to turn ff TV or computer every single that I am not using them.

I think that technology should be a want, but it has become such a large part of everyday life it is now a need. We should try and change this because technology should just be a want.

I agree with you. Why do not we do without all the electronics? once people know how to live without it. We should try to limit the electronic equipment.

Technology is both a want and a need. IN my mind there is nothing wrong with wanting things, so if you can pay for it than go for it. The enviroment impact seems relatively insignificant even if you are getting something new more than once per year (which most people aren’t)
