Claes Oldenburg’s massive sculptures of everyday, even mundane, objects are at times ridiculed. I find them to be classics! Some of the coolest examples of what pop art can be. A sandwich anyone?

Pauline Boty was young, blond, brilliant well-known and well-loved in the British pop art scene of the 1960s. Despite her genius, since her death in 1966 at the age of 28 (not 26 as stated in the film), her work has been somewhat overlooked. Her rebellious art demonstrated a joy in self-assured femininity, female sexuality - a critique of the man’s [art] world in which she lived. If anyone knows where her work can be viewed, please share with the group. Enjoy this very rare film of the legendary Pauline Boty!

I hadn't heard of Pauline. What an amazing story. What an amazing woman. She strikes me as the female James Dean of her era…a rebel artistic genius who left this world much too soon. -

What lovely paintings. I wonder why Warhol's silk screens have completely overshadowed Thiebaud's Pop paintings within the Pop Art world. I had never heard of Wayne Thiebaud before. I love this artist!!!!!!

Robert Indiana, one of the great and most anonymous of pop artists. His art often consists of bold, simple, iconic images, especially numbers and short words like EAT, HUG, and LOVE.

Very cool. I always wondered who was responsible for that “LOVE” sculpture. -

I've always LOVED this piece, but i didn't even know it was a sculpture. I assumed it was a painting. I wonder why Robert Indiana isn't mentioned more in relationship with his world renowned work of art?

Artist Beezy Bailey has used photographs of Nelson Mandela and influences from American pop artist Andy Warhol, the American artist who spearheaded the pop art movement. Bailey’s works are part of an exhibition entitled Icon Iconoclast, running from 5 May to 16 June, at the Everard Read Gallery in Rosebank, northern Joburg. See the images at the link below:

Pop art in Japan is unique and identifiable as Japanese because of the regular subjects and styles. Many Japanese pop artists take inspiration largely from anime, and sometimes ukiyo-e and traditional Japanese art. The best-known pop artist currently in Japan is Takashi Murakami.
