Claes Oldenburg’s massive sculptures of everyday, even mundane, objects are at times ridiculed. I find them to be classics! Some of the coolest examples of what pop art can be. A sandwich anyone?

Pauline Boty was young, blond, brilliant well-known and well-loved in the British pop art scene of the 1960s. Despite her genius, since her death in 1966 at the age of 28 (not 26 as stated in the film), her work has been somewhat overlooked. Her rebellious art demonstrated a joy in self-assured femininity, female sexuality - a critique of the man’s [art] world in which she lived. Wayne Thiebaud has always been one of my fav pop artists. For those of you who have a sweet tooth, watch this video at your own risk. No one does cakes and pies quite like Thiebaud!

Robert Indiana, one of the great and most anonymous of pop artists. His art often consists of bold, simple, iconic images, especially numbers and short words like EAT, HUG, and LOVE.

Mario Schifano was one of the great Italian pop artists. He’s often overlooked as a contributor to this artistic style. This video is testament to his grand talent.

Artist Beezy Bailey has used photographs of Nelson Mandela and influences from American pop artist Andy Warhol, the American artist who spearheaded the pop art movement. Bailey’s works are part of an exhibition entitled Icon Iconoclast, running from 5 May to 16 June, at the Everard Read Gallery in Rosebank, northern Joburg. See the images at the link below:

Pop art in Japan is unique and identifiable as Japanese because of the regular subjects and styles. Many Japanese pop artists take inspiration largely from anime, and sometimes ukiyo-e and traditional Japanese art. The best-known pop artist currently in Japan is Takashi Murakami.

Pop Artist Ed Ruscha at the preview of Fifty Years of Painting a major retrospective of his work held at the Hayward Gallery London October 13 2009. Ruscha has kept his studio in Venice Beach, LA for the past 30 years. This April, 2011, the city kicked him out to build a parking lot. He moved one municipality over, to Culver City.
