MIchele Baretto, May 15, 2013

Hello my name in Michele I’m from Italy and I’m from Italy and I’m 17. My total footprint is 39484 kg/CO2 per year. Don’t worry this is higher compared to the average Italian footprint because I live in a hotel. My home footprint is higher than my Region because I live in a mountain hotel and I use a lot of fossil fuels for heating because it is cold six months per year and we use a lot of woods. A possible solution is to change fossil fuels for heating system with another eco-sustainable energy, for example solar energy and hydropower.

Hello my name is Camille and I am from California. My carbon footprint was bellow the average in my country. I found it quite surprising because I am quite a busy person. I am hardly at home because of school and the many activities I have throughout the week. But luckily the car that my father drives is a hybrid. A hybrid car alternates the use of the car battery and gas. So it does not take up a lot of gas like most cars do. In my house, my father wants to save money on the electricity bill so he keeps the house around 70 degrees farenhiet throughout the year. The one thing I have to work on is taking a shorter shower. My showers last about 10-30 minutes.

Hi! I’m Mattia and I live in Cedegolo, Italy.
In this time, lots of teenagers, buy a new mobile, every year. I also would like to buy the last Apple’s smart phone but it is needlees because I’ve a mobile that works. I know that I-phone 5 is more trendy but why buy a new telephone? Besides I-phone 5 costs a lot of money and I think that it isn’t correctly to spend lots of money to buy a new mobile. One solution can be to buy a new mobile every two or three years and also if it isn’t the last model.

The technology is definitely both a desire and a need. The technology makes life much easier and communication, but the desire to have the latest technology is definitely more of a want than a necessity. If someone already has a phone or a computer, there is no real need to get the latest gadget, because what he or she should be good enough. to avoid you could not keep buying new models of mobile phones.

If companies didn't release new models so often people would not necessarily be 'needing' this newer technology, so yeah people have to avoid being tempted by the new models.

Hi, I’m Mattia, I live in Italy. My carbon footprint about transportation is very high because in my town there aren’t a lot of public transportation; there aren’t many buses, there aren’t underground stations and there is just one train. I live in the mountain and I use heating six months a year. People in my town use to recycle. I use electric energy and natural gas in my house, I haven’t got any solar panels. All cars work by petrol fuel and they pollute a lot! The mountain is cleanest than city! Have you got any suggestions to decrease my carbon footprint?

I believe technology is more of a natural progression. We use technology because we are used to using technology. If it was not around we would not know any better. I believe technology is more of a want and actually causes more problems than it solves. I am talking about technology in general. I do not plan on writing the unibombers manifesto but I believe technology will take us farther away from who we are as people. Things could always be simpler.

the technology is Very important, I'm talking about technology in hospitals. That technology has made firm by giants, is used to solve problems that even 5 years ago does not even know what it was.

I believe that technology is essential, but it may pollute the environment. we are not able to live without technology. In our society indispensable,
without the technology we can’t work efficiently. with technology you can travel quickly around the world, and be in touch in real time with all.

If we take the word “need” seriously and strictly, technology is not a “need.” “Needs” in life would be food, water, land, air and so on. Of course we can survive without technology.

However, in the society that we live in today, it can’t be said that technology is simply a “want” because one must have technology in order to be fully included and “functional.” For example, you won’t be able to have an active social life in the modern society without technology. Without technology, you won’t be able to work as efficiently as the technologically advanced modern society demands you to. Without technology, you won’t be able to have a resourceful, plentiful life because you will have to earn your money solely from manual labor that doesn’t require any technology. After years of technological development, we came to depend so much on technology that it is too late to live without technology now. Important aspects of life including money, entertainment and communication all directly or indirectly derive from technology.

To conclude, the technology is simply a want if one does not consider the condition of the current society. However, if one looks at this issue in today’s time frame, technology is a want and almost a need.

I agree. It all depends on how one defines “need.” True, technology is not a necessary for human survival, but it is necessary to be “functional”, as you put it, in society today. There is no going back from here. We either have to figure out a way to conserve technology, or figure out a way to produce more sustainable energy.

Although technology makes our lives easier it also creates a huge waste of energy and resources. Take Apple for example, they come out with a new version of one of their products every few months. People buy the new ones and jut toss out the old ones. I know some companies buy back old phones. Those should be made more accessible.

That's a good point, Morgan. I bet apple could save a lot of money by recycling the materials used for old phones to make the new ones rather than having to continuously acquire new materials.
  • Monique Raynaud Monique Raynaud May 14, 2013
I totally agree with this statement Morgan. However, there now are companies that you can sell your old electronics too which thus helps eliminate the waste of technology.

Technology is definitely becoming closer and closer to becoming fully integrated into nearly every aspect of our lives. With the newest model or version coming out it is hard to avoid spending and affecting the environment. However, only buying a new model once every few years can help while still having the latest technology. I’ve had my phone for the past 2 years and still am able to do the same functions that most of the brand new phones do today.

You're right, I think that a mobile phone can be used for 2 or 3 years if it breaks. New models come out all the time with very high prices that do not offer many services more than those that already exist on the market that cost less. Many people change their mobile to follow the fashion and to dispose those that you no longer use is very polluting.

Having a technology is both a want and a need. Technology surely makes our lives a lot more convenient, but without technology, our life expectancy would not be where it is right now. I have my fair share of technology that I don’t necessarily need. But it certainly makes my life a lot more convenient. Also, technology is our answer to saving the environment. Advancements in technology such as wind turbines, solar energy, can only be improved with these advancements.
