Discussions Discussion Wants or needs?
Jack O-US, Feb. 27, 2014

Hello there, my name is jack! I believe to succeed in life, especially in America, you need technology. You also need the most advanced technology so you can be most proficient at your job. This allows you to use less paper and helps save the environment. Advanced technology also allows the world to be better and improved. It allows us to communicate with each other and talk about ideas to help the world. I don’t think that technology is bad I think it is good for society.

I do not think that there is a need for new technology but there is at the same time because everyone is so into electronics that many people don’t even use paper to write on or home phones to call on. Everyone is so into electronics nowadays and Some people need the latest technology for the type of job they are in. Business people will probably need to replace their phone every year because it’s always in use with emails and messages and conference calls used. New technology can effect the environment by toxins and fumes. You can take a break with technology by dealing more with the environment. For example, if you go hiking, you don’t need any electronics - maybe your cell phone for pictures, but that’s all. You can go camping or the mountains. You’d be more healthy and active with the environment.

As humans living on Earth, we all have the responsibility to take care of it and saving it because it is our only home. Little actions can make big changes in the world. We must all be good examples to others, and encourage them to do the same, it’s a chain reaction! There are many ways to we can decrease our carbon footprint….turn off the lights when the room is not in used… turn the water off while brushing your teeth/shampooing/conditioning….Pay your bills online so paper won’t be wasted….skip the coffee stirrer….batch your errands together….these are just some ideas i am throwing out there! We all have different ideas on how to be green, teach it! spread it! do whatever so others can get the message!

That's exactly right!! We can't just wait for the world to improve itself; it is our duty as its inhabitants to provide positive influences on the environment. We all have this responsibility, and if everyone were to act on it, we could honestly make this planet a more beautiful and healthy place to live.

I agree with you! I believe that people should want to take care of the earth because it is our only home. Also, there often isn't enough motivation to be green and people don't really think about it. We need to spread the word and get people excited about doing the little things.

At home, my family does the best they can do recycle glass, aluminum, plastic, and cardboard. One thing we could probably work on is paper. While I’m in school, I do the best I can do recycle my bottles, cans, and paper too. I also recycle my water bottles at my gym. What I plan to do is buy a reusable water bottle. That way I can cut down on the bottles of water I’m throwing away at the gym, at home, and at school. I make sure to cut off my TV and computer when I’m not using them. I don’t keep the water running while brushing my teeth and I don’t take long showers. I try to unplug my straightener and anything else I have plugged in so I can save energy. The last thing I try and stay conscious of is turning the lights off when I leave a room. I do the best I can with my daily living activities… but what else should I do?

In our society today living in the United States, technology has become a necessity. I use my computer and phone everyday. In the United States it is a way of life. If you want to be included in society today you need technology. You have to fill out college applications online, you can even go to college online. It is a way to environmentally friendly by saving trees.

In the world today, I believe that it has become a need to have the latest technology. Schools are beginning to transfer to online activities and note taking abilities to make it easier and more manageable. A lot of businesses, in fact, almost all of them use computers to chart items, do research, make documents, and keep files online. If you did not have this technology, it would be extremely hard to learn anything in school or keep track of records at work. Not only do you use this technology in school and at work, but you use it to actually get a job. A lot of employers ask for the future employee to go online to fill out an application or watch videos for training. Not having this technology would be hard to do.

I personally believe that latest technology is a want. Yes, everyone uses it and they expect you to use it too but not everyone can learn how to use it. It is like buying the iPhone 4 when it first came out, then buying the iPhone 4s because it was new, and then buying the 5, 5s, or 5c just because its new. Not everything new is always better. I do not see a difference in how the phones work differently. Other than how they look, i do not really see the need for an iPhone 5s or 5c. I just recently upgraded to the iPhone 4s in November and it was my first smart phone. Before that I would get a new phone, for free, every two years with my upgrade. The only reason I got a smart phone was because of all of the stuff that it can do and because I will be going away to college next year. In my opinion, I think that there is no reason to go out and buy the newest model just because it’s new. How do you feel about buying the newest technology?

I completely agree with you Maddi, I feel our society has partially become too reliant on technology. I too have a iphone, a 5s, but I definitely agree with you about getting the 'new' phone because it's 'so much cooler'. Honestly, I think the media and marketing over exaggerates new technology about how 'neat and cool' it is, making us believe we need to have it. Truth be told, those companies who take advantage of that have been very successful from it.
Yes, technology is great and it helps save our environment in many ways. But, should some forms of technology (mostly for entertainment) be draining our wallets because it's a connivence we all love? Personally, my wallet says no.

In my household, we do all that we can to help the environment. It definitely isn’t our top priority but we still value the importance. We use reusable bottles whenever we can, recycle, don’t keep water running, take short showers, shut off lights when not in use, and eat organic foods. You cant save the world, but if everyone just made small changes in what they do everyday to help we could make this a better world to live in. You don’t have to do everything, just something.

i comletely agree! we can't save it but we can at least try not to make it worse. you can turn off the light when you don't need it, take a quick shower, wear a jumper insteand of turning up the heat,.. this is the least we can do for our planet.

I believe that having the latest technology is a need for America because we have become such busy people that we need ways to stay in touch with others. I myself am always doing something at school and having to stay late, so if my parents need to know where I am at, then it is easy for them to just text or call me. Personally, I do not get a phone very often, I do not get one until my contract is up (2 years). When I do get an upgrade, it is very much needed because the newer phones have better updates and other necessities that make a phone wonderful. In today’s society, we would not have a lot of things that we consider important if it was not for technology, like machines that have helped find cures for majority of the diseases, like the Flu or Polio. Technology is getting better and better every day and in the future who knows what amazing technological advances would be made?

I believe that it's a need because if you haven't got the latest technology you haven't good information and news but for young people it's also a want because they like last models and they are influenced by advertisement on tv.

Technology is definitely both a necessity and a want, in some cases ;like in the business world, or in communication, technology is most definitely a necessity. We need to have communication to talk to other over long distances and let out a message that other may need to know. We also need technology in business because it not only saves a TON of paper, but it also makes it easier to get a message out to other businesses. On the other hand though we do not really need the newest and best technology on things like gaming and apps. Like is having the new xbox or having siri on your phone. Those things are just basic wants that are not needed in life.

Bailey, I agree with you. When it comes to the business aspect or needing to get information, technology is a necessity. It has also led to many discoveries, which have been important to our changing world. But I also agree that when it comes to having the latest phone or apps, that is a need. People have become so reliant on technology, that when they are waiting at the doctor's or even having dinner, they are on their phone. It is a want and not a need to have the latest technology, which makes it to where you are on your phone all the time.

Bailey is correct, in the sense of entertainment, especially for young people, technology is just a want. Contrary to popular belief, we do not need the newest updates the exact day that they come out. Some have it planted in their heads that we cannot survive without being on the same page that the media infers we should be on. I also agree with Bailey in the sense that having the proper technology in the workforce is, in fact, a need. If one has a job that relies on a computer, and they have an outdated computer that is slow and incapable of doing certain things, their performance in their job will be extremely poor. There is no need in getting behind in the workforce when there is amazing technology available for your needs.
  • Leonardo Ferrari Feb. 27, 2014
I agree with you Bailey. Technology, nowadays, is crucial! I think technology just in rare cases is a need, like the latest version of a phone, but in most cases is a necessity, just think about all the things technology makes for us everyday or just try to live a day without technology… I think It would be impossible.
