You could use water bottles over again by filling them up with water or another beverage after you already drank the water in it. Then you could also use them for art projects if you like making art. You could also reuse paper that you by writing on the side without any writing on it though that won’t extend it’s “life” that long but extends it none the less.

Hi, my name is Lanvy, and I am from the U.S.A. Everyone says things like “Don’t throw that soda can away, recycle instead.” Never in my life have I heard of someone saying, “Reuse it for something else.” When I was little, there were only two options for things that I have already used, recycle or throw it away. As I have grown older, I noticed that a trend trending today are Do-It-Yourselfs. There are so many ideas on websites like Pinterest or pictures on Social Media. For example, one thing that many people seem to throw away after use are plastic bags from the grocery store. My family saves them for other uses such as using them as lunch bags. They are just as reliable as paper bags.

I am a big fan of recycling things, but literally reusing for other stuff hasn´t come to my mind. it´s a good idea, i´ll try it out!

cute video I found on the 3 R’s! I remeber learning this song when I was young and learning about recycling for the first time! But really it doesn’t matter how much you know about recycling but the fact that you want to make a difference in our world. Also I feel the more people you try to influence to recycle the better outcome we will get! so get out, be green and reduce, reuse, recycle!!

I was at a friends house when she showed me her collection of these bracelets!! They are so fun to make and a great way to recycle especially since the top of a can can’t be recycled. Try this out!

Hi, I'm Alex from Texas. My spanish teacher from eighth grade always collected these and encouraged us to bring them in for her. She was from Mexico and I think she worked with a charity that would collect these. For instance, every 10 soda tabs collected there will be 10 cents donated to a family in need. I am not sure if this is exactly how the charity worked or any specific details, but there are plenty of other ways to use these. -

Hello Rachel! I think this is a really cool idea! Normally when a pair of shoes gets old or small for someone they usually throw it away. If we were able to turn a pair of our old shoes onto new shoes, it would save a lot of money becasue you would't have to worry about buying new shoes. It would also save the enviroment becasue all of our old pairs of shoes wouldn't be throw away -

Today in French classs my teacher was talking to us about recycling. He told us a story about how one of his students put some food in the recycling bin and because of this we would not be able to recycle anything but instead just throw it away. I learned a lot fromhis story because I realised that food and water can not be recycled! Not only can they not be recycled but if you put it in the recycling bin everything must be thrown away! So next time when you want to recycle, I urge you to think, is this recycable?

Hi, I am Sakura from Houston, Texas. Houston isn’t known as a city that big on recycling(though we’re “big” on everything else), and I have lived here almost all of my life. So, when I went to a skating camp in Canada and had to live in a dorm, it was a whole different lifestyle. The biggest change between living in the States and living in Canada was that Canada was definately alot greener than the US. It was actually extremely embarrassing when I stood in line at the grocery store in Canada with my pounds and pounds of groceries, only to realise that Canada CHARGES for the use of plastic bags at grocery stores. As I looked around me, I realised that EVERYONE around me had brought their own bags to carry their groceries in. Luckily, the cashiers felt extremely bad for me, because I was completely clueless, and let me carry my groceries in a storage box that they no longer needed to use. This was a humiliating moment, but it really made me realise how different Canada is from the US. If America could use the same system and charge for the use of paper or plastic bags, we would be more inclined to REUSE our old plastic bags, or use sturdier bags to bring with us on every shopping trip. If the Canadians can do it, can’t we??

I completely agree, Sakura. Although it would probably face opposition at first, a bill requiring the customer to pay for each plastic bag used could really help the environment. I expect that if this happened, within a short period of time, reusable bags would be all people used. Not enough families bring their own bags to the grocery store, but if created, this law would give people the incentive they needed to do so. I respect Canada for making this law and hope that it will someday be made in the USA, too! -

I agree! I go to France every summer and they charge for bags too. It has tought me a lot about conserving resources and reusing them. I think that another great thing that grocery stores in America are doing is providing discounts and specials for people who bring their own bags. I think that if this trend continues, Americans might just vote for plastic bags to be baned, following the lead of Canada and other countries. -

Glad to know that I'm not the only one that feels this way!! If we can get alot of people to support our idea, maybe we can make a real difference! I predict that this could be a breakthrough for America if this follows through considering how many times the average American goes to the grocery store and wastes plastic bags. If the other countries can do it, so can we!

Hi, my name is Grace and I live in Houston, TX. Living in an industrial city like Houston, it is very important to recycle and reuse as much as we can. I for one take a lunch box to school and use a reusable water container. It reduses trash and saves plastic. I know another thing my family and I do is keep our plastic and paper bags from stores and reuse them for other purposes. Even keeping the plastic containers you get when you order food is a good way of repurposing items. Another great idea is reusing the other side of printer paper for scratch paper maybe. Less paper wasted equals more trees not cut down equals more oxygen in the air and less carbon dioxide. In the link below, it gives creative ideas to reusing items.

Hi, I’m AJ from the USA. Each day our consummation of new products goes up. If we remember the five R’s, refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle, we can make a big difference in the world. By refusing to buy the things that we don’t need in life, we help lessen the amount of trash thrown away. If we reduce the amount of products/plastics/metals/glass we use, we help preserve them for future purposes. If we reuse the products we buy, we cut back the amount of money we spend and reduce the amount of toxins needed to break down and recycle the product already bought. For example: plastic water bottles; instead of throwing them away instantly after you finish the water, reuse it and fill it up with some more water or juice. If we repurpose, we reduce the amount of solid waste that is discarded by giving it a new purpose. For example: old tires; turn it into a tire swing by hanging it from a tree with some rope! As for recycling, always recycle! When a person leaves a plastic water bottle, an aluminum can, or a broken phone lying about, recycle it! Having these products recycled and formed into new ones help the environment. Most importantly though, try and reuse and repurpose the materials/products you have; don’t hesitate!

Since the season of Christmas is on its way, many people are out shopping, wrapping gifts, and putting up their Christmas lights. When people are out shopping, they feel compelled to use the store’s plastic bags. It would be better if people would bring their own reusable bags in order to save plastic! Wrapping gifts is also a huge contributor to people not recycling. If you feel the need to wrap gifts with an excessive amount of paper, then you need to rethink your choices. Bring out that gift bag that you received for your birthday and reuse it! You can also recyle different objects in your home to create seasonal decorations. No matter what you reuse you are still making a difference!
In this video, the artist reused water bottles to create a magnificent piece of art!

Hi Lauren! I definitely agree with you on reusing gift bags and stuff. My family does it all the time! Also, do they make recycled wrapping paper? Because around Christmas time everyone is openeing presents and the majority of them are wrapped in wrapping paper. Wouldn't it be great if instead of throwing it away, we could get people to recycle it? I bet there is some company out there that is willing to make new wrapping paper out of recycled paper. I also like that video you posted! There are so many ways to recycle and reduce our carbon footprint around Christmas time! -

Hi lauren!! i also completely agree about reusing our own gift bags when shopping. During christmas and the holiday season my family uses so much wrapping paper it's unreal!! I am trying to work on using some gift bags and tissue paper instead to wrap my presents. This will hopefully save my family time, money, and what's great about the bags is you can reuse them too!! And I loved the video you posted as well!! So creative :)

This apparently no longer has scientific basis. A web search or two for “refilling plastic bottles” will turn up a swathe of conflicting, well, opinions. This page might be one of the more comprehensive ones: http://www.plasticsinfo.org/beveragebottles/apc_faqs.html
Case in point, at the very least…remember to clean as you would a metal or harder plastic bottle. A toothbrush might do. And, logically, no hot liquids; better safe than sorry, I guess.
2. There's also the concept of [the waste hierarchy] if anyone's looking: http://www.sepa.org.uk/waste/moving_towards_zero_waste/waste_hierarchy.aspx
3. And I do appreciate the art. Saw a bottle Christmas tree back in New York a couple of years ago; it wasn't the prettiest thing in the world, but it was certainly saying…something.
