Gilbert F-USA, May 2, 2013

Hello! my name is Gilbert Feng, and I’m from California. I’m 11, and our teacher had our class calculate our carbon footprints. I thought I was going to be about the same as people from California and less than people around the world. When I saw my total, I was surprised how low my transportation and purchases CO2 emissions were. My transportation CO2 emissions was 526 kg per year and my purchases CO2 was 283 kg per year while people in my area had 2557 kg per year for transportation and 1191 kg per year in purchases. My home CO2 emissions was pretty low, but I was expecting that to happen because I always turn off the lights when going out of a room, use paper double-sided, and turn off the water when I’m brushing my teeth. I had only 1250 kg per year of home CO2 emissions while the average for California was 3757 kg per year of CO2 emissions. I was also expecting my food CO2 emissions to be really high (like near average) because I always eat a LOT. My food CO2 emissions was still below average of the average person in California, but only by a little (2061 kg per year to 2223 kg per year). My total was 4119 kg of CO2 emissions per year and the average person in California produces 9728 kg of CO2 emissions per year. I’m higher than the average human, though, which is only 3791 kg of CO2 emissions per year.
I want to open the windows and use the heater and AC less because I use the heater and AC for about 4 months a year and that contributed a lot to my home CO2 emissions. I am also thinking of eating less meat and more vegetables, but my mom says that I’m too skinny to stop eating meat. Also, I want to buy less electronics. Typically, I buy about 1 per year but now I want to buy none per year and find other games like card games (Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, Magic, etc.) and board games (Monopoly, Sorry!, Chess, Checkers, Chinese
Chess, etc.).

That's funny what you mom said- maybe you can tell her that you can eat vegetables that have fat, like avocado.
  • Gilbert F-USA Gilbert F-USA yesterday
Yeah, but not lots of vegetables have fat, and also our family does not buy avocados.
  • Jason Hodin Jason Hodin today
Well, how about nuts (peanuts, almonds, cashews) ? Those have plenty of fat as well.

Nicholas F-USA, May 2, 2013

Hello, I’m Nicholas from California. I calculated my carbon footprint and I found out that
the total amount of co 2 I release per year is 4962 kg per year. I release 1410 kg for transportation, 2263 kg for home energy, 927 kg for food, and 362 kg for purchases. My total pretty low compared to my area, 9728 kg. I plan to lower my carbon footprint even more by sharing the lights with another person in one room instead of going to another and wasting more electricity. Does anybody have any more suggestions?

I also have a low carbon footprint. Like Zoey said, you can use fluorescent light bulbs or even better just turn the lights off when you don't need them. Also, trying walking to school if your house isn't that far from school and don't waste food.
  • elisabetta chanel elisabetta chanel May 6, 2013
Hi Nicholas, I also have to work to descrease my carbon footprint, infact my carbon footprint is 8007 Kg of CO2 and my counutry's carbon footprint is 8181 Kg of CO2. You should recycle reducing your wastes, buy organic food and don't throw away what you don't eat. If i were you i turn off the light whenever as possible. keep working for a better world!!!

Yeah, my mom ,like Isaac's, gets cold really easily too. She usually puts on blankets or a sweatshirt. Sometimes she turns on the heater and I think that made my carbon footprint higher.

Paula Mirando, May 2, 2013

I’m Paula Mirando from California, USA and as part of my AP Bio class, I had to calculate my carbon footprint. Apparently, the average person in my area omits 9728 kg of CO2. After calculating my own carbon footprint, I found that my CO2 emissions total up to 10380 kg. That was scary. My transportation and purchases totals were below average while my food total was just a little bit above average. However, when it came to home energy, I realized I release 5575 kg of CO2 compared to others in my area, who on average release 3757 kg. That is a really big difference. It freaked me out a little. Weird. But then I thought about it. We don’t use the heater that much and we almost never turn on the air conditioning (our downstairs is pretty cool in the summer.) So I figured it must be the water, which makes a lot of sense. I wrote down that I take 10 showers a week. That may or may not be true. I just laughed at my own joke out loud. Embarrassing. I’m not sure how to lower my carbon footprint as far as home energy goes but I would like to walk and take public transport more often. I think I will also eat more vegetables and go back to that thing where I only ate seafood and chicken to cut back on the food category. Maybe I’ll never turn on the lights at home. I’ll unplug my laptop when I’m not using it. I’ll charge my phone less too. Amazing.

Nice resolutions! :P You can still take 10 showers a week (or not take 10 showers a week ;) ) but make sure they are SUPER quick so you don't waste unnecessary water. The point is to reduce carbon emissions, not make us filthy!
I would also have to change my eating habits to reduce my CO2 emissions, but I'm a bit less ambitious than you and I already know that it ain't happenin'. So kudos to you for your will! :)

Marwan El Battouty, May 2, 2013

Hello.
My name is Marwan El Battouty.
I’m from Cairo, Egypt.
My carbon footprint is above average, mine is 8779kg where the average of Egypt is 3353kg.
My majority of the carbon footprint came from food which was a huge surprise as I didn’t know stuff like using their bags or not being a vegetarian would affect my carbon footprint so much.
It was expected that my transportation would be way above average because I live far way from school, and I take the bus everyday back and forth 5 days a week for the entire year. So that was expected.
In terms of home, it was also sort of expected that most of it would come from using the air conditioner so much.
Finally, my purchases aren’t so much anyway so that didn’t contribute so much to my carbon footprint.
Overall, I think my carbon footprint is not as bad as I expected in comparison to how much I thought my average usage would be.
From this survey, I learned that almost everything I do contributes to my total carbon footprint and that everything I use, no matter how small it may be, will affect the total in the end.
The main actions I can think of that would strongly decrease my Carbon Footprint would be taking care into how much I use the air conditioner, trying to eat less meat and being more of a vegetarian, and not using unclean public transportation so much.
Thank you!

Marwan El Battouty

my transportation was the most because every year we take at least 2 flights
  • ethan W-usa ethan W-usa May 2, 2013
i barely use the air conditioning

Marwan- I realize that buses in Cairo probably are vey polluting. In many poor places in the US, the buses are also dirtier than in richer cities. This is a justice issue- it impacts climate change but also air quality and the health of everyone. Hopefully people in Cairo will start to demand cleaner buses!

Hi Anna & Janice- The footprint calculator divides your footprint by the number of people in your house, so that should not make your footprint higher. It's true that 4086 is higher than the Poland average, but lower than a lot of places in the world, including most of the USA (average = 7069 kg!!). Anna- can I guess that heating your home is a big part of your family's home footprint?
  • Anna G-Poland Anna G-Poland May 10, 2013
I was really surprised that category the “home” was so high. I think that this result is very big because I use coal to heating for 6 months per year.
I will try to save water, segregate waste and use energy-saving bulbs.
I will try to make a change in my lifestyle to preserve our planet!
  • Ewa K-Poland Ewa K-Poland May 10, 2013
I have the same problem, My result was 3139 in category “home” -the highest, most because I use coal heating for similar times as Anna and it hard to change it but we can do many things to protect planet. We can't forget about it!:)

Xenia P-USA, May 1, 2013

Hi! My name is Xenia Perez and I’m from California, USA. I’m currently 16 years old and my AP Biology teacher introduced this Carbon Foot Print Challenge to myself/classmates earlier this week. My carbon footprint total is 14,173 kg of CO2 per year compared to the average footprint of 9727 kg for California. The majority of my carbon footprint is transportation, and i’m not surprised with that outcome. Probably every other day i go out with friends after school and that contributes to my footprint, but on the weekends I always go out with my family to some far away destination. Whether it be an amusement park, shopping center, and the like. In the future, I do plan to reduce activities that will increase my footprint, perhaps, conserving energy, traveling less…basically trying to be more green. Hopefully reducing my carbon footprint will help the environment, so it can last longer for generations to come.

Airel E-USA, May 1, 2013

Hey, I’m Airel Elgincolin from Union City, California. I’m currently 17 years old. In my carbon footprint, I noticed that I’m releasing the most CO2 from transportation. The total amount of released CO2 from transportion alone came up to about 4874 kg CO2. Since I got my license and now commute to school via car everyday, my CO2 emissions has surely increased. Hopefully in the near future gasoline-powered vehicles will be replaced by those that use natural fuels or electricity for the sake of our planet.

I feel like the majority of everyones carbon footprint is due to transportation. I think you should get a hybrid car because that would help with your CO2 emissions problem [:
  • Airel E-USA Airel E-USA May 2, 2013
I shall consider one in the near future. :D
  • Marwan El Battouty Marwan El Battouty May 2, 2013
Like almost everyone else, the most contributing factor to your carbon footprint is transportation. Hmm, like Xenia said, you can also get a hybrid car, it helps the environment and the gas used would also cause less. Another way that can help is using a bike more often, or jogging or walking. It's good for fitness and is much better than consuming more fuel and gas thats coming from burning fossil fuels and coal. Try it and see how it goes!

Samantha B, May 1, 2013

Hello, my name is Samantha B and I am 17 years old, living in California. My total footprint is 15515 kg of CO2/year. This is relatively high compared to the average person with a footprint of 9727 kg of CO2/year and a footprint of 3791 kg of CO2/year world wide. I found that the huge factor that contributes to my footprint is in transportation. I found this to be the highest of all the other categories because I participate in quite a few extracurricular activities and volunteer in various places as well, all which are pretty far from where I live.

Hi Samantha! I can definitely relate to this considering my carbon footprint is also higher than the average in my country. Transportation is an issue for me too, but my Home Energy usage is higher than transpo.

Christine H-usa, May 1, 2013

Hi from Union City, California!!
i am a 17 year old high school student that was introduced to this project from my Ap Biology teacher to further evaluate just how much my daily usage affects my carbon footprint.
My total footprint is 7,281 kg of CO2 per year compared to an average of 9727 kg for California and 3791 kg worldwide.
Transportation: 2167 kg
home energy etc: 3323 kg
food: 1189 kg
purchases: 602 kg

I was shocked by my outcomes of my carbon output in a year with each category and both amazed at the same time on how just small details in my daily life can impact my total results.
From my results i have learned to appreciate far more than i have in the past on the information i have discovered based my this project. In the future i hope to lower my carbon footprint by a significant amount especially in the home energy category by conserving electricity, gas, and water usage. The next time i retake my footprint calculations i hope that my numbers will be decreased than it is now. With this information from this project i wish to spread the ways to conserve and better use the details of my daily life to those around me.

sincerely,
Christine H-USA

Sanja Siladi, April 30, 2013

Hi eco-friendly people! I’m Sanja and I live in Kotoriba, Croatia. I’m 17 years old. I was really interested in this project, so I joined it.

My total footprint is 6885 kg of CO₂ per year, compared to
an average of 5736 kg for Croatia, and 3791 kg worldwide.

Transportation: 1638 kg
Home: 3816 kg
Food: 1302 kg
Purchases: 129 kg

I was very surprised of my carbon footprint! I thought that it would be lower because we grow our own organic vegetables, don’t use air conditioning, recycle and save electricity by using fluorescent bulbs in rooms where we spend most of our time… Hm, the problem might be my long showers (Mea Culpa :P) … Well I could lower my footprint by saving more water and by using fluorescent bulbs in each room of our house. The only problem is that these bulbs aren’t so cheap. Sometimes being eco- friendly is expensive…

Well, I saw that most of the students from the USA have a very high carbon footprint… I wonder why?

Interesting. It seems as though your home emits a lot of CO2. I'm curious, do you guys often use your Air Conditioning or Heater?
  • Sanja Siladi Sanja Siladi May 2, 2013
Well, we don't use air conditioning at all but we use heating 3-4 months per year…
  • Zoey S-USA Zoey S-USA May 2, 2013
In my house we don't use fluorescent light bulbs. I'm guessing it's because it, like you said, isn't cheap :p My carbon foot print isn't very high and I think it's because I eat a lot of meat! :D
