If you are stranded somewhere alone in an unknown area with possible danger most people would decide to find someone they knew, but if they are not here? then they need someway to contact them, and in order to contact them from that far distance you need a cellphone, a cellphone which lets you contact people from all over the world, that has brought new meaning to communication. If you are bored and waiting in a long line at the DMV, and surprise they don’t have wifi, and you want entertainment that is compact, quiet, and gives you almost the same experience as a computer, then you want a smart phone. What’s the difference between want and need? Well that depends on the situation and the goal, but if the necessity is survival then most everything in our lives today are absolutely unnecessary. Look at the time before technology, mankind got along fine surviving, it wasn’t a comfortable lifestyle by any means, and yet they managed to live. At the beginning of the human race all we focused on was survival, then slowly through the ages it was survival and work, then survival, work, and religion, then eventually leisure was added to the equation. with every era our cultures and technology advanced, why because that is apart of being human, wanting more, seeing there could be something better out there and attempting to make it happen. Now, history has come to the “technological generation” and our culture is mainly based on leisure and entertainment, but unfortunately our advances has lead us to the downfall of our planet and what’s even worse is that most don’t even care, they are content as long as their boredom is sated. With our generation it has been taught that want and need are the same thing because survival physically of your body has been replaced with social survival. Social networking rules the world now, and if you want to be on that throne you have to have all the latest gadgets. This is the world we live in, this is the America I live in. Children are so sheltered and self-absorbed they couldn’t care less about the planet they live on as long as long as they have a smart phone. But can we really blame them? I mean America is one of the leading deniers of global warming and definitely one of the leading countries in producing the most CO2. To solve this problem this country needs to get fully on board and start making it mandatory to be taught in education, because there needs to be awareness. It’s not yet too late, we can save the planet everyone just needs to pitch in.

Ever see those car commercials that show an action pack background, the sexy women, rich men, abstract colors and unrealistic scenarios? Like the commercial for the new Mercedes, and the devil comes to this guy and offers him a “deal” while showing him girls, fame, and fortune. Sure, who doesn’t want to be famous, be popular with women(or men), and be insanely rich? But that’s just the thing. We WANT to be famous, we WANT to have a successful love life, we WANT money. Having a car , or a nice house, or women, or fame isn’t a need at all. But commercials these days make us think the opposite once they show us what the world thinks is an ideal lifestyle to have. So much so that , such as in the commercial I mentioned before, we would even consider selling our soul to obtain these things. Its ridiculous what people these days can get away with in commercials. The next time you see a commercial on TV, tell yourself, will that really make me happy Do I really need this in order to be happy and have this kind of lifestyle?
In modern-day society, to outline wants and needs is a difficult thing. It’s almost a personal thing, because everyday something new is advertised, published, or sold and most of the time those things end up being just another toy in our daily lives, that shorten processes. For example, what would you do without the Internet? How would you find ways to entertain yourself? Another example would be a cell phone; this is very debatable because some people truly need them just to get home every day after school, while others (including myself) mostly use it to digitally talk to people. We complain whenever our phone or Internet doesn’t work, yet people as recent as 30 years ago, didn’t have access to any of the luxuries we have and nonetheless they seemed to survive fine without them.
Going back to the idea of personal, many people have specific items for specific needs. Many people have special items for sports, school, and other activities; swimmers have their fins and students have their pencils. Yes, without these things we couldn’t do many things like write; these things are needed for some activities. These are needs, not wants that are not needed; wants are not needed, they are luxuries that are extremely comfortable and help you shorten processes that might seem difficult and annoying. They now control our everyday lives and motives; they help us and make our lives easier, save seconds, minutes, or even hours.
Lastly, with our purchasing of meaningless products ever increasing, so does our CO2 level. Every year we increase our CO2 outtake with incredible amounts; food, households, and other things are the main CO2 factors, but so are purchases of any item. Those items require CO2 to be made and used; every purchase requires a small yet major amount of it. CO2 contributes to global warming, ice melting faster, and other things that speed up global warming.
There are many choices to make when deciding on what to cut down on. There are the wants and there are the needs. The wants for me are electronics and games and stuff that is not really important. Some devices are important and are needed to do business or anything like that. But teenagers like me use electronics to text and play, which is not important. Decisions need to be made on what you really need and what is there just to entertain you.
There are things in life that I have trouble cutting down on. I play multiple sports and I travel a lot, so do my siblings. We travel upwards of 200 miles every weekend. We are trying to think of more efficient ways to travel, but it is difficult. I also have a lot of family on the east coast, and we travel at least once a year to visit them. This I definitely something I am not willing to change. I just have to find efficient ways to travel without cutting it off completely.
People need to make more intelligent decisions when dealing with their wants and needs. They need to be able to decide if it is more important to have the new iPhone or to visit family and play sports. You just need to be able to do little things like turn off lights and shorten showers. I know people who take twenty minute showers, which might be the easiest thing to change. Decisions are important because every little thing counts and people need top contribute if we want our carbon footprint to change for the better.
I personally think that whether having technology is a want or a need, depends on the situation. For example, some people might need the newest iPhone because it could help them improve their business. Also, having a new phone could make it easier to communicate with their family, friends, or coworkers. On the other hand, some people buy new technology to play games, or watch videos. It would be better for the environment if people didn’t need new technology, but sometimes it is necessary.
I haven’t gotten a new cellphone in four or five years, and it has started interfering with my ability to communicate with my friends and family. As long as one waits until their phones capabilities aren’t sufficient, I would say they have decreased their carbon footprint. I am a (for lack of a better word) tree hugger, so I always consider the environmental effect my purchases have. Unfortunately, I have noticed that many people ignore the fact that their purchases of new technology can increase humanities carbon footprint.
I am clearly split between want and need. Yes, humans survived without technology, but at what cost? Their are so many diseases that can be cured now. You can move to new place and still talk to and visit your family. I am not denying that it has an ecological effect. Technology is not good or bad, it’s a balance between. The secret is finding the balance.
i think the fact everyone wants the next big this plays a very key part in the fact that our carbon footprints are so high. if we all stopped spending and wanting s much as we do rght now our carbon footprint could drop drasticly. my famiy but a lot of food and we sometimes end up throwing it out because we have too much to eat before it goes bad. i alsothis that we should carpool and use greener ways of transportation more often. his could also improve our footprints if we worked together to carpool to work or school. i amd going to try and carpool when i can. i also am going to cut down on shower times amd remeber to turn of my lights.
There are different opinions here, and I agree with different point of views. However, if you think about it, technology is an absolute want. Reasoning for this is because back then they did not have very much technology and they did just fine. Now that proves that the technology we have is not a necessity, it is simply a wanting for the new technology out there. I may be being a tad hypocritical, because I, also, have the latest technology, but I am admitting that the technology I have right now was a want. I wanted that, I did not need it. And you could say technology is a little distracting to us teenagers, so that is another example of being a want.
People often want much more than they need it’s in our nature .Sometimes though we have to do things that will maintain healthy environments and protect the planet we live so i have a suggestion that can be challenging but it will get everyone in better shape ;D it’s worthy trust me.
Everyone should use less their cars and take a walk, ride a bike or even jog to go in a place ,which is not that far and by doing that you will help the environment and there will be less air pollution!
Think about it you will enjoy it also! there are many advantages that’s why i am encouraging you and of course i didn’t say that you can’t drive at all but try to do it at least whenever there is a real need and you don’t have any other option .
BE MORE ACTIVE PEOPLE :) you will feel the difference
I’m seeing so many people put in the same comments, that modern technology is more of a want than a need. As a trans-humanist who values technology, I disagree. I think that any technological advancement, necessary for every day life, or for personal reasons, is progress. And progress is progress, in my opinion. That being said, I do agree that Apple needs to quit it with the new iPhone being released every other month. This may be more of a personal preference, but I digress. I really do like my smartphone, and there is no denying that it has its uses, even in school. Technology is wonderful, and I personally wouldn’t want to see anything hinder its progress.
Recently, the new Pokemon X and Y game came out around the world, but modified only for 3ds. Those without the approximately $200 system would either have to go without the $40 video-game or buy a whole new system. i personally have a 3ds, but if I didn’t would I really be willing to buy one just to play a video game I enjoyed? Do I NEED a 3ds. the answer is no, I want a system.
