Virgin readies space ship test flight:

Virgin Galactic, an offshoot of Richard Branson’s Virgin Group, expects to test-fly its first spaceship beyond the Earth’s atmosphere this year, with commercial suborbital passenger service to follow in 2013 or 2014, company officials said.

Nearly 500 customers have signed up for rides on SpaceShipTwo, a six-passenger, two-pilot spaceship being built and tested by Scaled Composites, an aerospace company founded by aircraft designer Burt Rutan and now owned by Northrop Grumman.

RICHARD BRANSON: Be a leader — not a boss

A leader is very different from a boss. Many CEOs are bosses, not leaders, directing their employees from well behind the front lines. But sitting in the boardroom listening to even the most comprehensive reports from the front can never compare with your being there and seeing, hearing and understanding those interactions with your customers for yourself.

If you aren’t frequently out there leading the charge with your employees, you simply cannot stay in touch with the realities of your business.

Actively seeking to listen to the Voice of the Customer is quite important as buisness is all about creating a market and satisfying customers continuously.

Spain will build a space hotel by 2012

Galactic Suite Space Resort will be located at an altitude of 500 kilometers and fly around the planet at a speed of 30.000 kilometers per hour. Four guests and two professional astronauts will be able to stay.

It is assumed that the tourists will be delivered to the Galactic Suite and back to Earth by the company Virgin Galactic, owned by the British tycoon Richard Branson.

I knew that billionaires Elon Musk (Space X) and Richard Branson (Virgin Galactic) had their sights set on space travel but I had no idea that Jeff Bezos was also bitten by the aerospace bug (Blue Origin). I guess when you have that much money, you start hearing the Star Trek theme playing in your head and can’t get it to stop until you pour some of that money into building an Enterprise.

Richard Branson christened the world’s first commercial spaceport in New Mexico on Monday. His Virgin Galactic plans to begin commercial space tourism from the spaceport by the end of 2012.

Richard Branson On The Environmental Impact Of Space Travel:

First of all, our space company, because our technology is brand new and not 40 years old as NASA's was, we will be able to put someone into space for less than the environmental price of an economy class ticket from London to New York and back. So almost no carbon output at all. And I think that we might almost be able to, when we fly in a year's time, be zero-carbon. The way that we're heading towards that is that the profits we make from our airline businesses we invest in clean fuels.

On top of that, we can put satellites into space for almost no carbon output because we're launching them from 60,000 feet rather than land-based satellite launches. So we definitely will bring the carbon footprint of space travel down quite dramatically. The building we just built in New Mexico is LEED certified, and every single thing that happens there was done with the environment in mind.

Discussions Discussion How Does One Live as a Leader?
Ricky Burkhardt, Oct. 14, 2011

Richard Brasnon, founder of Virgin Group, shares his unique insight into why Steve Jobs was an amazing leader. Here’s an excerpt from Sir Richard Branson’s article:

Leadership doesn’t have a secret formula; all true leaders go about things in their own way. It’s this ability to think differently that sets them apart…Whatever your [leadership] style, whatever your method, you need to believe in yourself, your ideas and your staff. Nobody can be successful alone - and you cannot be a great leader without great people to lead.”

In a 1997 marketing campaign for Apple, entitled ”Think Different”, Jobs said: ”Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently.” I am proud to say that, in the accompanying montage, he counted me as one of them.”
