Discussions Discussion Plastic - the Great or the Threat?
Eleonora Bianchi, May 16, 2013

Hy everyone! My name is Eleonora and i live in the north of iItaly.Plastic is a big problem, both society and the environment, the use of plastic is favorable for some factors, but if you think that the pollution it produces you change your mind. Plastic is one of the pollutants present in large quantities in the world. In recent years with the collection and thus the collection of plastic you have had many favorable factors, so you have to continue to recycle for the good of the world.

Discussions Discussion Plastic - the Great or the Threat?
Benjamin Ehlers, May 14, 2013

I am a high school student that lives in the Monterey area. There has been a plastic tax imposed on plastic bag usage when shopping. The charge was originally $0.10 and has most recently been upped to $0.25. This gives buyers incentive to bring their own bags. I believe this to be an effective measure no matter how small it may seem.

substances like this already exist! corn and sugar based plastic substitutes work just as well as plastic and biodegrade easily. they are slightly more expensive than plastic, which is why they aren't readily available right now. of course, growing the sugar and corn also requires resources, but resolves the issue of being non-biodegradable that plastic poses. We should try and use these alternatives instead of traditional single use plastics.

Instead of using plastic people should use things they can reuse. For example, instead of drinking out of a disposable plastic water bottle use a bottle that you can use over and over. So there would be a lot less plastic you would use if you did stuff like that. Some plastic things aren’t disposable like that though so we need to make those things out of a better material that is overall better for the environment.

I feel that plastic should be band from this earth, really if the people of earth want to use more fossil fuels, and wish too stay on such a path, then using our fuels as a waist for making plastic should really be reconsidered, at least try to make a far more reusable resource.

    i agree 100 % with your statement

I as well agree 100% on that, especially with using our fuels to make plastic being a waste.

Discussions Discussion My Plastic Free Life
jay chou, Nov. 29, 2012

HI, my name is Jay Chou. I am from Dominican International School in Taipei, Taiwan. i think its not necessary to use plastic bag when you buy things. You can bring your own bag. You can save money, and save the environment, make the Earth the better place. Every time you didn’t bring your own bag, you will need to buy the plastic bag, after using the bag people will throw it away, and you can’t really burn it, it will produce bad things to damage the environment and its dirty to recycle it. So i suggest to bring your own plastic bag that can use for many times. Save the Earth with me people, make the Earth the better place, and let your children to live happily

I agree. Whenever i go out to buy something, I don't even use a bag. I don't buy too may things to a point where I can't hold them in my hands without a bag. If I do buy many things, I usually use a paper bag, which still isn't as good as using a reusable bag.

Serena Yeh, Nov. 28, 2012

Hi, my name is Serena. I am from Dominican International School in Taipei, Taiwan. Have you ever heard that iPhone is PVC free? I recently discovered that iPhone4 and later models are made 100% free of plastic. I find that it is a pretty awesome fact and also proud of being a fan of Apple products. The reason I say so is because that I am aware the other brand’s phones such as Samsung Galaxy S3, HTC One X, Lumia 900, etc. all contain plastic materials. In all honestly, I believe that Apple seems to be the only company that stresses the importance of environmental protection by using only environmental friendly materials. Not only iPhones are PVC free, the other major products of Apple including MacBooks, iPods, and iPad are also 100% free of plastic. Since we are living in a technology era and 3C products are becoming necessity in our daily living, I appreciate that Apple has done a good job in making PVC free products to help reduce environmental impact.

Discussions Discussion Plastic - the Great or the Threat?

We use plastic for everything. Even though it is recyclable if you do not recycle it it takes 500 years to decompose. Recently people have been taking the step away from styrofoam and toward plastic but we need to take another step and use paper or corn based cups. It takes one million years for glass bottle to biodegrade, five years for a plastic coated paper cup and five thousand years for styrofoam. It is pretty obvious what the right choice is so why aren’t we making it? Of course because plastic is cheaper than paper.

Not only is plastic bad for our environment but it is bad for ourselves. Almost all water bottles contain many chemicals that over time are leaching into the fluid in the bottle. One of these chemicals is BPA which stands for bisphenol A. BPA is found in toys, water bottles, storage containers, and baby bottles. Many reusable bottles are now sold BPA free but water bottles are not. BPA free bottles have not been sold until recently. As a result of drinking out of plastic bottles we have been slowly poisoning ourselves.

Discussions Discussion Plastic - the Great or the Threat?
Sara C-USA, Nov. 23, 2012

Hi, I’m Sara from Houston, Texas. One of worst types of plastic is polystyrene foam, also known as styrofoam. This material often used in packaging is takes hundreds of years to biodegrade and is very difficult to recycle which is why it rarely is. The video bellow is a presentation by Eben Bayer, co-inventor of MycroBond. Mycrobond is a product grown from agricultural waste and fungi that could replace polystyrene foam. It takes less energy to produce and can be composted at home. I hope that in the future we can replace harmful plastics with better products like this.

Discussions Discussion DISCUSS: Green products
Julie M-United States, Nov. 16, 2012

You know those water bottles that use less plastic? The coffee cups that use recycled paper, etc.? I believe these products shouldn’t just be “special”; they should be all products. The “greenness” should be applied to every product that is used daily. Imagine if instead of your cleaner reading “green”, the greenness was assumed!
