Arts: The Art of Video Games:

The Smithsonian American Art Museum opened their new exhibit, the Art of Video Games, with a big festival this past weekend. If you missed it, don’t worry; the real festival, the exhibit itself, is far from over, as it is going to be running until September 30th.

Art of Video Games is, “one of the first major exhibitions to explore the 40-year evolution of video games as an artistic medium.”Awesome!

SXSW 2012: Should Web Sites And Video Games Be Preserved Like Art Is?

The archive for digital art, ArtBase, was established in 1999, and now has 2,500 artwork records, with more than 520 artworks archived. What constitutes art work? Internet art is any kind of production when the intent behind it has an art historical context.

For example, 2007’s “VVebcam” by Petra Cortright is a more recently archived work. “Vvebcam,” which originally lived on YouTube, was taught in universities and became an important reflection of our times. But since it had 200 or more tags associated with it, last year YouTube took “Vvebcam” down because it violated their spam levels. Since VVebcam is no longer online, here’s a vid of another one of Cortright’s creations.

Digital artists AES+F exploring themes of post colonialism. The project features creative concepts exploring an imagined future of luxury, servitude and rituals. Think of it as a large digital mis en scene piece of artwork that play on cultural observations that reflect on the foibles, paradoxes, consumerism and stereotypes of identity formation of the contemporary world, mixed with a healthy serving of voyeurism.

An Internet Art Fair:

New York Times, Martha Schwendener reviews the VIP Art Fair 2.0, the Internet’s first major art bazaar. It’s 2.0 because this is the second year for the fair. Last year, it had all sorts of technical problems, but this year they seem to have been smoothed out.

The fair is an online version of a traditional art fair, with each exhibitor’s page on the site described as a “booth.” It includes 135 exhibitors from 35 countries.

Man Ray (1890-1976), best known in the art world for his avant-garde photography, produced major works in a variety of media and considered himself a painter above all. But when I look at this film he created, “Le Retour a La Raison” (1923), I can’t help but draw parallels to Internet Art. Quite simply, Man Ray was a modernist genius.

Pretty awesome stuff. Makes me wonder how many other avant garde artists of the early 20th century can be said to have, in some way, foreshadowed the future of internet art. I never knew Man Ray also did film.

Since “Art Basel Miami Beach” is happening this week, thought I would share a video of Miami’s coolest neighboorhood (and one of America’s)…the Wynwood Art District in north Miami. There will definately be some beautiful Internet Art on display there this week.

Great for first 3-4 minutes, then I wonder “what's the point” and I start getting bored. Probably just me, tho, bc the idea is clever.
