William Licopoli, May 10, 2013

Hello,
My name is Bill Licopoli and I teach Environmental Science for 11th and 12th graders in a public high school north of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the United States. We focus on climate change and the students have been very responsive. A large part of our curriculum concerns fossil fuels and energy consumption so this program fits very well. This is our first international project and look forward to hearing all of the discussions from students around the world.

    Hi Bill,
My name is Maria, I teach English in a secondary school . My students are studying to be building technicians and are aged 16-17. This is our first international project too. What is climate change for us who live in the Alps? It is glaciers melting!!
Most of my students are good skiers and in summer they usually go skiing to the Presena Glacier ski resort in the Alps. The problem is that due to global warming the glaciers are melting. Now ski areas in Italy are wrapping at least part of their glaciers with a sort of white blanket (it is a type of protective fabric) to keep it cold through the summer. The glaciers may not feel better, but the resort owners certainly do!!! It seems to be working: The melting has slowed. The problem is that you can't wrap a whole mountain range in a blanket. But with so much riding on Alpine ice and snow—skiing, tourism, service industries, and the livelihoods of probably millions of workers—it's easy to see why some people might want to. Yet it will take more than blankets to shield the Alps from the environmental and human pressures facing them today.

Maria Consiglia Tesone, May 8, 2013

Hi,
My name is Maria Consiglia, I teach English for building technicians at IIS Meneghini Secondary School in Edolo, a small town in the north of Italy. We live in a beautiful area in the Alps. Here the mountains are breathtaking and there are a lot of national parks and natural reserves. Students are encouraged to respect and not damage the environment, but maybe they are not aware of their impact on nature. After gathering data we were impressed about our carbon footprint, particularly in some categories such as home and transport, compared to other countries.
My students are aged 16-17 and they are studying to be surveyors. They are interested in eco-building and sustainable architecture, they have not participated in any international project before, and I think this may be a good opportunity for them to think about what they can do to reduce their energy consumption, and to share opinions and solutions, with other students of different countries, to minimize the global environmental impact.

Dimitrios Theodoridis, May 7, 2013

Hello, everybody from α beautiful and warm country in the Mediterranean sea called Greece. We just had Easter holidays and now, we are back at work. I am really glad to participate in this session and exchange information about carbon footprint statistics and environmental issues. I believe, that a stepping stone to knowledge is a building block for the environment.

The results from the carbon footprint calculator were really interesting because we have realized that a number of activities in our daily life are environmentally harmful. Our biggest carbon footprint results from the use of woods for heating in the winter. This is a problem caused from the economical crisis that we are facing the last few years. Also, after lots of discussions we have concluded that the right use of technology can prevent most of the environmentally harmful activities. For example, the creation of electric cars, solar panels, wind turbines, geothermal energy, sea wave energy, recycling, composting, …….. are some of the solutions which could help the environment to recover.

I wish you all, to have good discussions and useful results. The protection of our environment must be our first priority because it affects our present and our future lives.

Hello. I’ve just sent my students’ results to the email address given in the instructions for completing ISCFC class data. It’s really interesting to compare all the results.
Unfortunately, my students will be back at school on 10th May only so this is when most of them will join the discussion. However, I’ve already seen some familiar names here:)

Dubravka Cokrlic, May 5, 2013

Hello everyone!
My name is Dubravka and I am a teacher from Pozega, Croatia.
I participated with my students in the ISCFC in 2011 and 2012 and since it was really a rewarding experience, I have decided to join you again.
I have just gathered and sent my student’s footprint data to Jason and hope that my 9th grade students will soon join the discussion. They are only 15 years old and have not participated in an international project before but I hope they will do their best and manage to show how much they care about our planet.
I am really glad to hear that so many young people and teachers from all over the world (almost fifty schools from twenty countries in this session!) are eager to learn from each other about environmental issues and to take actions to decrease their carbon footprint.
Here is a link to our school web pages in case you are interested to find out how I have celebrated the Earth Day with my 11th graders two weeks ago:

The article is in Croatian but I hope that you will enjoy the photographs and some very interesting suggestions made by the Nature Conservancy.
I am really looking forward to collaborating with all of you and reading your students’ posts on Einztein!

Dear Martina- A warm welcome to the project. I'm amazed at how articulate your students are!
  • Martina Vidović Martina Vidović May 5, 2013
Thank you, Jason! My students don´t have problems with the language because most of them are taking few (some of them all) subjects in English and it is probably easier for them to write their opinions and discuss about the problems related to the carbon footprint even though they are not using their native language. Some of the students are more involved in the discussion, some are less involved, probably they will put more effort in it during the week. I am looking forward to reading their comments and comments of other students from all over the world. I think that this will be a great experience for them and that they will learn a lot trough interacting with other students. :-)

If your class participation in the International Student Carbon Footprint Challenge is featured in your school or community newspaper, we would like to post a link to the article on our “ISCFC Schools in the News” discussion. If you can send that link to me at pam.miller@stanford.edu I will share the good news!
