Hi I’m Lauren from Texas. My favorite Pop Artist is Wayne Thiebaud. I love that almost everything he paints looks realistically delicious, the combination of magnified and muted colors, linear order, and defined shadows. I come from a school that boasts several bakesales so we can all relate to his love of pastries and baked goods. I also have recently painted a recreation of his works in the form of a simple, but in my opinion, elegant pastel-colored cupcake with a cherry on top. This picture below is definitely my favorite of his.

Pop artist and sculptor Gerald Laing dies aged 75… He spent much of the 1960s working in pop art in New York and was a close friend of artists Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.

Laing’s most famous works included images of actresses Brigitte Bardot and Anna Karina.
In October this year, he showcased a series of paintings and drawings of Amy Winehouse in London.

This is a monument to Soviet Army, which is located in Bulgaria’s capital city Sofia. There is a large park around the statue and the surrounding areas. It is a popular place where many young people gather. It represents a soldier from the Soviet Army, surrounded by a woman and a man from Bulgaria. There are other, secondary sculptural compositions part of the memorial complex around the main monument. The monument was built in 1954. But on June 17, 2011 the monument was painted overnight by unknown artists, who “dressed” the Soviet Army soldiers as american comics characters: Superman, Joker, Robin, Captain America, Ronald McDonald, Santa Claus, Wolverine, The Mask, and Wonder Woman. After this action a lot of people said that they like the new look of the monument and that now it looks modern. The monument was cleaned in the late hours of June 20, 2011. With this post I want to show you the vandalism wich pop art can make.

Pop art is the name of an artistic movement born in the second half of the twentieth century.
It was born in Britain in the late 1950s, but it has developed mainly in the U.S.A. since 1960s, extending its influence in all Western world.
It called “pop”, like popular; ‘cause it’s a mass art, that is produced in series.
Pop art uses common elements that surround the man, criticism of the consumer society, comics, or cars…
It’s artistic form goes through the most popular ways of comunication: comics, advertisements, paintings reproduced in series.
The most important exponents of this movement were: Andy Warhol, born in 1928; or Keith Haring, who was born in 1958. In 1989, Haring drew a mural in Pisa, called “Tuttomondo”, dedicated to universale peace.
I like this form of art, especially for the visual impact that creates; so colorful. As simple things become very interesting and irresistible.

Pop Art is fascinating in that brings art back to the material realities of everyday life, to popular culture. It’s a place where ordinary people find most of their visual pleasure from television, magazines, or comics. This is a classic short film featurign Andy Warhol eating a hamburger. Next time you’re having lunch at your desk, turn it on…and maybe introduce yourself to him at the end.

Artist Beezy Bailey has used photographs of Nelson Mandela and influences from American pop artist Andy Warhol, the American artist who spearheaded the pop art movement. Bailey’s works are part of an exhibition entitled Icon Iconoclast, running from 5 May to 16 June, at the Everard Read Gallery in Rosebank, northern Joburg. See the images at the link below:

Sam Green, who died on March 4 aged 70, was a leading light in the promotion of American pop art — particularly the work of Andy Warhol: Green became director of the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia in 1965, when he was only 25, and he took Warhol with him, the two men making their museum debuts together; it was Warhol’s first retrospective. Green chose Warhol’s S&H Green Stamps as the 40x40cm invitations he sent out for the preview – and for the design of the silk tie that he wore under his white Gucci evening suit. For a space that held 300, he invited 6,000…
