AutoLib green car rental scheme hit by vandalism in Paris

One month after its launch there are reports that Paris’ innovative car rental scheme has been hit by vandalism problems. One quarter of the 200 cars have had to be withdrawn as a result of vandalism and break downs, leaving just 150 cars in circulation.

A rough start indeed. But I remain faithful that AuotLib will *must* succeed.

I said it before and I'll say it again, AutoLib is doomed unless the cars are kept clean inside and out. The company must hire people to clean each car in the fleet at least 2 times a day. Would you patronize a hotel if it didn't clean its rooms after each customer check-out? Same concept.

I don't know, Henry. Zipcar (http://zipcar.com) succeeds by obligating renters to leave the car clean. If they don't, they get charged for this on their credit cards. Maybe Autolib needs to do its research.

Karl Lagerfeld was a guest @LeWeb this week, a top flight internet conference held in Paris. It’s a scintillating discussion for all fashion+techy+geeks. Notice how everyone applauds for the fact that he owns 4 iPhones….not for the fact that he owns 300k books in his personal library!

In Paris this week. Very impressed with the new eco-friendly light rail tram system that they’ve recently built. It services the southern part of the city superbly. Very impressive!

Yaaaay!!!! :) I tried the AutoLib yesterday for the first time and it’s incredible!!! I already love it. It officially launched on Monday of this week in Paris.

If you haven’t heard, AutoLib is a pay-as-you-drive electric car rental in Paris. 1200 of them have their own special electric parking spaces around the city. I’m very happy about it because it’s very cost saving, reduces pollution and traffic.

How much does it cost? €5 for 30 minutes (almost same as 2 metro tickets), €10 a day, €15 a week or €144 a year.

Similar to a hotel room, keeping these cars clean inside and out on a daily basis will be critical to the success of the program. I love this concept, but would quickly stop using it if the car interiors are not cleaned daily.

Too cool. I'd sell my car in a heart beat if I had access to this service.

AutoLib latest news: PARIS — On Oct. 8th, Mayor Delanoe invited Parisians to preview the public car service Autlolib with staff on hand for test drives. Ten of the eventual 508 stations within Paris were open to introduce the compact and environmentally friendly electric “Bluecars” produced by French investment group Bolloré. This is another step in Dealnoe’s attempt to reduce traffic within the City of Light.

The idea —The Autolib will officially debut on December 5 following the success of the revolutionary public biking system, the Vélib. The idea, much like the Vélib, is to subscribe to the service and take an eco-friendly car from point A to point B without worrying about parking along congested Parisian streets. The city hopes the system will help remove around 22,000 gas-powered vehicles from the French capital. I’m very happy Paris is embracing this program!

The last time I was in Paris, I took full advantage of the shared bicycle services (Vélib). Can't wait to see how Autolib works. This is truly innovative. I hope it works and other cities follow the example.

This is an amazing idea! American cities need to replicate this.

AutoLib, the pay as you go electric car rental service launches TODAY in Paris!!! The AutoLib project is aimed at reducing the need for the private cars that hog Parisian boulevards as well as offering locals and visitors a chance to discover electric cars. The city of Paris has spent 35 million euros ($47.8 million) in building the car rental stations, while neighboring communes have contributed 50,000 for each station. Just pick up the car at a nearby kiosque, drive to where ever you want to go in the city, and park it in designated green parking spot… and don’t forget to plug the charger in so that the next person find a full battery!

In Paris, I heard that AutoLib will begin an electric car sharing service this December 2011. This would be an amazing solution to providing eco friendly private transportation that responds to the need of travelling longer distances, also during bad weather. You can’t ride a bike or a Segway when it’s snowing or raining. AutoLib has been testing their service in and around Paris. Paris is so ahead of the curve when it comes to testing eco friendly transporation solutions! Here’s a neat photo. Notice the preferrential rock-star parking privileges!

We have a few electric cars here in the U.S., but Paris has taken a huge step in beginning the initiative to improve air quality in large cities. Great work!

In houston, we are in desperate need of something like this. First of all, it's a big city with lots of transportation. It would also reduce the carbon footprint that we use when traveling to home/school, especially when it's on the other side of the city. It's great to see this happening in other places around the world though.
