Value Creation from Opportunities

You need to identify opportunities to create value. That is the essence of entrepreneurship. And to identify opportunities, often you need creativity/lateral thinking. The professor gives a few examples including one really out of the box idea.

Very interesting video segment. I was so intrigued by Oxford's one word essay that I did some quick research on it to unfortunately find that this “devilishly” clever admissions requirement for All Souls College, at Oxford, was discontinued. It had been offered annually since 1932.

The linked article gives interesting insight into this exam and the creative thinking former students used to execute it.

One way to stimulate creativity is humor. Edward de Bono recommends this quite consistently in his works. And when you want to be jerked out of fixed pattern thinking what is better than a RGM - Rube Goldberg Machine?

Rube Goldberg’s legendary capacity to make simple things complex (yes, you read it right!) has captivated me from my first encounter with his works in mid 80s.

Here is a video just one of the umpteen ones on YouTube. Just an appetizer this. Caution: RGM is addictive!

This is SO much fun! Its so creative. It reminds me of the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang with the inventor Caractacus Potts played by Dick Van Dyke whose inventions had a similar feel to it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_D1ZCvmVsFY

@Mauro: Yes, there are aplenty on TY. Plus there are so many competitions around RGM. In fact a mini industry has grown around RGM! What I have posted is not after anything special or not even teh best but just one I had stumbled upon last night. I wd encourage the rest members of the project to discover and post their best discovery here ;)

@Emily: Thanks for the CCBB vid link. I did not see the movie but I had heard about it. The clip is truly a RGM based on the chain reaction principle which is at the heart of any RGM.

Poka Yoke or mistake proofing

these examples are really ingenious solutions. Which of them qualify as examples of lateral thinking?

I think this is one of them: “Many smoke detectors are designed so they cannot be mounted on the wall until a battery is installed.”

Number 11: “This airport luggage cart has brakes which are applied whenever the yellow handle is not depressed. Carts will not roll unless they are attended. When carts nested, the rear wheels of all but the last cart are wedged off the floor, so the carts can be pushed easily by airport staff retruning them to service areas.”

Discuss: Where is lateral thinking needed more?

Today I was called in to judge a competition where management school students were presenting their new business ideas. I came away with the impression that students have novel ideas for new products or services but are weak in ideas for realizing those products into actual businesses. In a word they are fairly okay with the WHAT but not okay with HOW.

So I am wondering whether we have enough good examples of how lateral thinking helped in putting into the market a new product idea.

The best business idea or business plan is only as good how it is implemented. Even if one knows HOW to implement the plan, the WHEN aspect of the equation is equally important. In other words, the TIMING of when you actually implement various aspect of the plan is critical to success. I've pretty much arrived to the point where I believe the HOW and WHEN aspects of business are much more complex than the idea. It's often due to poor execution that great business plans fail. And only experience can teach you how to avoid this pitfall - something most students don't have.

Well said. I guess new ideas get romanticized in management books seminars training sessions and academic portals far more and less attention is paid to the key aspects of execution which includes the processes, methods and resources and when.

Yesterday a student had come up with one 'new' business idea of delivering at doorstep fresh cut vegetables everymorning but had no clue to the logistics involved in it!

Quite often conventional thinking does not get us anywhere. Going against the flow helps.
Here is an example from the movie Gods Must Be Crazy where the native uses lateral thinking. Watch the clip!

Very funny clip! I watched this movie several years ago and remember many examples of creative thinking throughout the story.

Nina, yes the movie has innumerable instances of creative thinking that flies in the face of staid conventional thinking! I just picked up one of my fav moments from this classic spoof.
